I wouldn't at all mind seeing a layperson in the role if the right candidate can be found.
MU would have to change their by-laws. It is currently written that it has to be a Jesuit. I do not have a problem with that at all, I prefer it to be a Jesuit, unless the right Jesuit can not be found.

As mentioned, the by-laws were amended in 2011. According to JSOnline, The bylaws state that "the president shall be a member of the Catholic Church, and the board of trustees shall give preference to the Society of Jesus."
