Really sad, as that is way too young.
A great character for the NBA, and the dunker than drove the need for the breakaway rim.

A truly funny man too. When I was in HS and he played for the Nets he was a regular on Warner Wolf's TV show on Monday evenings after the local news. He was a talent ball player, very exciting to watch but he had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He will be missed.
And because he didn't go to college, when they introduced players naming their college, did he request that they say he was from Planet LoveTron?

We met him at an event in NYC a couple years back. Very nice guy. Spent time with my little kids. Funny, when it came time for pictures, he was trying to get them to look fierce.

In this day and age, who can imagine using that nickname? The professional, perpetual outrage machine (of which both sides have one) would be, well, outraged.

Stevie Wonder.
Goose - that was actually my guess too, but Mac got it.
Who would have thought a blind man gave a basketball star his nickname?

I had heard that story a few years ago and had same thought. That is why I would remember it.

Daryl Dawkins himself said it was crazy that Stevie Wonder came up with the name since he had never seen him play.

Who can forget Dawkins squaring off against Maurice Lucas in that iconic '77 finals - Mo going with the John L. Sullivan pose. I'm pretty sure that led to his "enforcer" monicker and that great pose in the NBA SI preseason issue for the '77-'78 season - wearing denim from head to toe IIRC.
'77 a great year for MU - past and present players.
