Impressed early with Traci Carter.

Good strength. Appears to make good decisions. Pass first kind of PG. Defends.

This game is getting ugly. Poor shooting and suspect defense with TOs as well.

Outside shooting and rebounding look to be our biggest problems again this year.

Thoughts so far...

Traci Carter looks fantastic. Best player for Marquette in the first half. Can drive, change speeds, pass in traffic, shoot the three, and find the open man. Made some freshman mistakes, but he's exciting.
Awful free throws. By my count 6/15 in the first half with at least one miss on every trip.
Duane just puts up points. 13 in the first half despite seeming quiet at times.
Ellenson will be good but making mistakes. Strong rebounder, great athlete. Still bumps to work out.
Fischer and Ellenson will be a tough tandem to deal with inside as long as they can avoid foul trouble. We're going to see lots of teams packing it in to keep us from getting the ball into the paint.
Strong second half start, 9-0 run is the best for Marquette today. Sandy with 5 of those points as MU has their first lead since 1-0 (now 46-43).

FT shooting just as bad in second half.... (:

Take into consideration jet lag/fatigue. I hope once they get acclimated, the play will improve.

If we get out of this game without an injury I will be shocked - the floor is in awful condition - can't keep it dry. Luke and Wilson's falls both looked awful.

Mostly ugly but you can see the potential. Carter looks like he is going to be fine

Has Luke received the ball on the low block the entire 2nd half?

absolutely love when henry brings the ball up the floor - draws attention and makes smart passes. Man he is good.

Pretty sequence for Duane...block on one end and beautiful 3 pointer off a pass from Henry

Fun game to watch, though the floor is abysmal. Lots of slips. Duane just drilled a deuce to make it 78-77 Marquette.

Marquette on a 24-6 run. Amazing way to close out this game. 89-80 with 20 seconds left.

And he's really good.

Love that they faced a team with 4 shooters on the floor. Great test for the halfcourt defense. The guys have to be better at talking, and tracking their man without abandoning help defense/rebounding responsibilities. Lots for the coaches to point out on film.

Do we have any idea the quality of team we played today? Hard to put much into context if we don't know the quality of the opponent.

Okay, a few more thoughts...

Duane Wilson, WOW! Just took over the fourth quarter. Immense play. Him and Henry could be a special combo.
Traci Carter looked very good. Did well on both ends. A few mistakes, but he's a freshman. Good range, passing, and defense. He will make us better from day one.
Henry is the real deal. Had to have a double-double. Just a smooth player to watch, makes difficult plays look effortless.
Those floors were dangerous. Glad no one was injured. I really hope they play at better facilities the rest of the trip.
Cohen is much improved. Still starts his three point shot too low, but was a strong rebounder, aggressive in traffic, and looked more confident.
JJJ might be the forgotten man. Anim looked better in limited minutes for both. Wally also played more.
Not sure how good Haukar really is. They looked solid, but tough to say. It was a competitive game, though. Fun to watch.
Free throws were awful until the fourth. This team needs to be better at the line.
Fischer had some moments. Him and Ellenson will be a good tandem down low.
I believe Cam Marotta was wearing a 54 practice jersey. Seeing a tiny white kid in that shirt after years of Davante was really funny to me. It seriously looked like one of Davante's bros had snuck down onto the sidelines.
This team will be more fun to watch than last year. Hard to say this soon if they'll be better, but they will certainly be more entertaining.

Few quick thoughts ...

1) Really like what Sacar Anim brings to the team. Does all the little things. He will be a big part of what happens in 2015-16.

2) Traci Carter is better than I envisioned. Really solid PG who passes, defends, rebounds and can score. Very impressed.

3) Henry Ellenson is -- without question -- one of the most skilled big men to ever come out of Wisconsin. Special talent. He loves to compete, too.

4) Duane Wilson's shooting is impressive. But his vocal leadership and ability to get into the lane are also impressive. Thought Duane and Traci put tremendous pressure on the guards from Houkar.

5) Matt Heldt will get his time, but his role this year appears to be to get stronger and give Luke Fischer/Henry Ellenson some rest. Matt will do very well in that role.

6) Sandy Cohen has really added quality weight to his long frame. His confidence appears much higher. Nice to see.

7) Luke Fischer has a deadly hook shot, but he can also make face-up 10-to-12 foot shots. Wish he's take them a big more often.

Outstanding first game. Defensive rebounding and foul shooting were poor, but the effort and ability to pull out a victory were impressive.

That's a concern of mine as well. If I were to guess, I'd say Haukar would probably be comparable to some of those Bucknell, South Dakota, Belmont type teams you see make the dance. They definitely had experience and didn't back down. Spaced the floor well and could definitely shoot. Also a smart team that didn't waste chances (only missed 2 FTs I believe).

It is hard to assess. They are a pro team, but they seem to be a middle of the road Icelandic team, which certainly isn't Italy, France, or Spain. But they were tough. Just going off the eye test (which I admit I hate to do) I think this was a solid win. Not as good as some teams we'll see this year, but good enough that this test alone tells me the trip should be worth it.

He didn't play very much and was pretty average when he was in.

Sultan is spot on. Limited minutes and pedestrian when he was in. It's one game, so take it for what it's worth, but I'd say he's behind Cohen, Wally, and Anim in the pecking order right now.

Interesting, three common opponents. I suppose in theory this will give us a comparison base with Georgetown.

Duane Wilson had 28 points and Henry Ellenson had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Luke with 10 pts and 10 boards.

The opponent was impressive in that just about every player on the floor could shoot with range. They made some deep 3's. Their ability to shoot with range opened up the opportunity for them to get offensive boards, MU could not sag off anyone. Reminded me of Davidson from 2013.

For a game on August 12 with so many young players, I thought MU performed very well. Their ability to take it to another level in the 4th was encouraging.
