(OT) Rice Lake Tracksters

Well known that Wally and a former Rice Lake teammate Michael Lihrman, now at UW in the hammer throw, are NCAA contenders. Now Kenny Bednarek, a freshman at Rice Lake HS is making news.

Yesterday in the sectionals, Bednarek finished 3rd in the 100 meters in 10.85 seconds, won the 200 meters in a time of 21.83 seconds and won the 400 meters in 49.46 seconds. A freshman!!!! I think Rice Lake won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays as well and didn't even use Bednarek yesterday in the relays.

On a high school golf note, Marquette recruit Charlie Malecki from Homestead won the Cedarburg WIAA Regional by 4 shots with a 1 over par 73. Sectionals next week.

49.46 as a frosh is a scary good. 100 & 200 darn impressive as well. Might be seeing him in SI's "Faces in the Crowd" before too long.

2nd in D2 at state in the 200 and 400 meters and 6th in the 100. Pretty tough wind on Saturday and that's why the scores were higher in the finals. Under 48 seconds in the 400 meters and a 21.66 in the 200 are very impressive, especially for a freshman.

To put his accomplishments in context, the Chicago Tribune Athlete of the Month for May was Plainfield Central's SENIOR Kahmari Montgomery who swept the 100, 200 and 400 in Class 3-A - the first ever to sweep all 3 events in the large-school meet. His won the 100 in his best time of 10.50...won the 200 in 20.96...won the 400 in 46.24.

He's going to Missouri.
