View Full Version : MU vs Providemce Game Thread
Sorry guys - was gone during DePaul game saw none of it (as long as I didn't see it, it never happened).
Starting lineup....
Derrick Wilson
Duane Wilson
Matt Carlino
Juan Anderson
Luke Fischer
Some unfavorable officials today....
Three former MU recruits in the starting lineup for Providence - Kris Dunn, Carson DeRosiers and frosh Jalen Lindsey
Also on the roster for Providence is Madison Memorial's Junior Lomomba.
I mentioned off the bat that these were not some of my favorite officials. Wally Rutecki and Tim Clougherty are usually pretty bad, especially Rutecki. The head ref id Jeffrey Anderson, I have liked him.
The jump ball call when DeRosiers tied up Fischer was 4 feet from me, a foul no question.
The foul they called on DeRosiers when Duane drove to the hole? DeRosiers didn't touch him.
Both bad calls were Rutecki.
Cooley going nuts on the fact that his team has 7 turnovers 6 minutes into the game. Not a happy camper.
Rutecki with another bad call on the Jujuan Johnson charge.
When Luke hit the floor he was holding his left shoulder in pain.....again. I know they say the brace is only precautionary, but that shoulder is making me nervous.

Nice to see Sandy Cohen with early PT and even nicer to see him hit two 3's (since no one else on the roster seems capable of it)

MU guards getting penetration, but not dishing the ball. Tough shots or charges. Like the aggressiveness. Need to hit some shots.
MU up 1 at the 11:41 mark 15-14, but losing on the glass 7-5. Key is that Providence already had 8 turnovers which resulted in 9 MU points.
MU woes at the line continue, 1-4 from the stripe.

He hurt it in a previous game as well. Seems like a matter of time before it really gives out on him.
Exactly DC - need to get Sandy some PT.
Ted - you post that and three seconds later Duane gives up the shot clock because he won't dish the ball.

When the guy gets the ball at the high post, there's enough room to take the shot.
Wojo LOVED Derrick Wilson's hard foul on DeRosiers.

Providence is really tall out front. The threes may have to come from the wing.

MU is going to see a lot zone unless they can start knocking down some outside shots with some consistency.
Great play by MU on the defensive end, force the turnover - bring it down - Jujuan to Derrick with the score, but how in the hell was that not a T? Wally Rutecki is beyond bad. Oh my God.

Thank God Providence is in love with the turnover
Yes - at the 7:30 mark Providence has 10 turnovers and MU has 11 points off of those turnovers.

Reminds me a little of Syracuse. Providence has been sloppy and doesn't look like they are ready to play. Then all of a sudden they can reel off points.

JaJuan needs the floater.
Seton Hall and Villanova are in OT - The Monitors are up by one with under a minute to go.
Seton Hall 66, Villanova 61 in OT - Final.

Well, tied at half and I'll take that. Need to make some 3's in the second half as Providence will play better.

Can anyone beside Cohen make a 3? We should be up double digits if anyone else could make an outside shot. Carlino desperately needs to hit one to get his confidence back.
Keys for MU in first half.....
Rebounds: MU up on rebounds 16-12.
Turnovers: Providence has 11 turnovers, MU has 13 points off of those turnovers.
Sandy Cohen: 4-4 from the field, 2-2 from 3pt, 2-2 from ft - 12 points in first half.
Assists: MU always plays better when they move the ball around, at the half they have 7 assists on 13 made baskets. Could be more, but I'll take it.
Shooting Percentage: MU shooting 43.8% from field. Not as good as Providence' 50%, but good. Need to improve on the 20% from three.

They need to hit the 3's, but still think the middle is soft and either Juan or Steve could hit that 12 footer and open up some passes out to the wing or the corner for open 3's. Need to get Carlino going.

I am confident when Sandy Cohen has his feet set for a 3. Can't remember many MU players over the last 2 years that I felt confident whenever they shot a 3...much less a freshman. He is going to evolve into a really nice player.

Inability of Carlino and Duane to hit a shot is glaring right now. If Carlino can't shoot he really adds nothing to your team.
Thank God for Sandy and all of the turnovers or MU would be down big.
Size of Friars bothering Luke
Agree on a lot of what was said.
Ted - the 10-12 footer. So many players these days, not just them, are so dead set on driving in for the obnoxious "AND ONE!!!!". Prove you can drop the 10-12 footer and you will change how any team plays defense.
2003 - He may have the best form of anyone, needs to set those feet and let it fly!
Mark - Agree on Carlino. (and as I was about to hit submit he steals and goes the other way for two).
Told Gato at the half, every time I see DeRosiers all I can think of is Buzz saying, "Carson, WHAT WERE THEIR NAMES?" One of my favorite recruiting stories of all time.

Finally for Carlino
Ted - I agree with you on the second half crowd, but as long as you have volunteers manning the concession stands, it will always be slow, forcing the meet-ups to be slow, delaying the return to seats. I hate it, but it is what it is.

3 on Fischer. That is bad news
Derrick taking the charge was huge - keep momentum with MU.
MU on a bit of a roll. I wish Jujuan would have tried to pull that one back out instead of driving to the hole against two defenders, but how was he not fouled?
Providence now up to 14 turnovers, MU with 16 points off of those turnovers.
Also, despite a huge size advantage (Derosiers 7'0, hukwu 7'2, Harris 6'9 & Bentil 6'8) MU up on the rebounds 23-20.

4 on Fischer now. Dumb foul. Taylor needs to do something now
No charging call, then Dunn picks up the foul against Steve, Rutecki looks at the two guys getting up off the ground and says, "Everybody alright?" Geezus - its a charge or its a foul, but that much contact on a layup has to be something.
Only showed one replay angle of the Fischer foul here at the BC and it looked like no contact, did replay on TV show different?

Johnson really needs to work on his ball-handling in the offseason.
Side note, seen on the Kiss Cam - a Polk High #33 jersey. Isn't that Al Bundy?

MU ends to run a play to get Carlino an open 3...set some picks or something.
I know it was at the end of the shot clock, but Carlino finds himself alone in the lane 6 feet from the hoop and short arms the shot? Come on man, you have to knock that one down.
I know I have been harsh on him, but Wally Rutecki is consistently bad. Derosiers loses ball out of bounds. Flat out lost it. Calls it off of MU? I would have accepted a foul from behind, but no way was it off MU.
Stat sheets on their way out, anything you guys want to see in particular?

Officiating has been brutal, and I'm pretty sure Providence fans are griping about it too.

Guards continue to get shots blocked. Guys are open.
Exactly - Rutecki is bad all the way around. The others have blown calls too. It isn't one sided, its just bad.
This one is under review - looked exactly like the last one. Foul on MU? Don't know, but I do not believe it went off on MU. Derosiers lost it. who was right there? wally Rutecki on the call again.
MU - coast to coast with a dunk on four passes, ball never touched the floor.....and then they give up an easy one.
Juan has zero fouls - he needs to get a little more aggressive underneath on the defensive end.

Henton is a really good shooter. Jujuan should not be out there at the end...not a ball handler
You usually see the bench players waiving their arms to get the crowd up, Chris Carawell taking that duty today.
Great win, MU 75- Providence 66.

The home teams are undefeated in the Big East so far (pending DePaul being able to hang on against Xavier)
Cooley in post game presser says he takes this as a coaching loss and says that he can't wait to get Marquette in the Dunk in March.

Excellent bounce back from the debacle at DePaul.....MU didn't shoot it well but got contributions from everybody.9 big rebounds for JJ. Wojo admitted he made a mistake not playing Sandy in the last game. Refreshing to hear that from a coach.

JJJ had 10 rebounds. He got a cheapo one on Providence's last shot of the game.

Sure, but he looked darn good otherwise with his rebounding, passes and steals. He is maturing before our eyes.

Main weakness of JJ at this point is strength/ability to finish against the tall timber.....

They certainly did today w/ PC's length, but in general, both are good at getting to the hole and finishing and like Nukem said, both need to clean up their handles. One of JJJ's last forced drives he could have flipped it back to a trailing Luke.
Love both players though - JJJ can really get himself open - just hope those shots start falling - great athlete and fun to watch.

Plenty of patience, love both kids. Just an observation. Lots of length in BE.
