Matt Tiby is a forward for the UWM Panthers. Today, he took to Twitter to address the fairweather fans he is seeing on campus that are apparently huge Badger fans yet can't support the school they attend:

You shouldve just went to Madison if all you guys are going to cheer them on this year like most of you guys have been doing all year...


It could be because im a huge fan of Iowa athletics that i dislike most badger fans but if you go to uwm cheer uwm on. Not an instate rival


Wisconsin has had some success and keeps advancing; now EVERYONE loves wisconsin? Is this how sports really is? Bouncing from team to team?!


Students that go to UWM prob went to watch UW games in milwaukee. We play here all year and couldnt get a decent crowd. Thats super funny😂😂😂


Wisconsin is a great basketball school lets be very honest. Very disciplined and well coached. But they havent made this far in the tourney (1/2) For atleast a few years now. Everybody is loving wisconsin now... They are a great respected program and now everyones on there bandwagon (2/2)

Not taking away from UW but theyve earned better fans then ppl say they are. Just be loyal to your team. Im just competitive so i Rant


But isnt it most athletes wish to have the best fans and best student section? Im just saying I want more of that case closed


be true to who they are loyal to. You dont see a nets fan rooting for the knicks or a cubs fan cheering for the brewers

I think the problem is that most UWM fans don't view UW as an "in-state rival."

Most UWM students don't follow their own school. My daughter is a freshman at UWM and has never been to a game. It's too bad, but it is the way it is.

I had two nephews who graduated from there. When the younger one got there, I heard the typical "Marquette used to play us all the time, until we got good" line. But then I watched a Marquette game at their house and Jimmy Butler came on the screen, and one said to the other, "Hey, that's Jimmy! What a nice guy." They had met him at a party. It took until late in the evening before they figured out he played for Marquette.

I do not think either of them actually ever attended a game. It is just not a big deal at UWM.

The Cell would be a great place to watch a game. Unfortunately you have to watch UWM however.

It's clear the BC wasn't designed with basketball in mind. Great extras like the scoreboard and sheer size of venue, but I would love it if Kohl built a basketball-first stadium.

Sad, sad commentary about UW-Milwaukee. Feel bad for the players. Also surprised the UW-M PR staff hasn't clamped down. The idea of UW-Milwaukee going to Div2 or 3 would probably be fiscally responsible. No alum / student support beyond 3,000... despite the fact that many, many Milwaukee people have taken courses at UW-Milwaukee whether graduating or not, almost like a community college. I recognize that academically it does well by students. But if the student, alums and city of Milwaukee doesn't care about supporting teams, why keep spending tax $s against it?

It's just sad that a school of what, 25-30k (?) can't get support at games. I think coaching is an issue. Not that Jeter is horrible, but part of what made Pearl so successful is that he's a showman. If the program doesn't sell itself, you need the type of coach that will sell it for you.

I guess your comment would then kill 200 plus D1 schools. Averaging around 3,000 puts you around 140 out of 340 in D1.

Not all D1 schools have UWM's size or market, though. I'm not knocking Milwaukee, but they have drawn a bit in the past. Just seems like there are serious issues with the direction at the top.

With that kind of enrollment, you'd think they could draw to the Cell. A lot of Milwaukee alums here in town too. I agree with Jim that UWM not trying to elbow their way into the MVC was a big mistake.

I said it then and I will say it again - their hire for the athletic director was a HUGE mistake. No, not talking about her abilities, not talking about her resume etc., but when all of the conferences were shifting, and there were conferences looking to plug holes, they needed someone out there trying to get them in the door somewhere, yet they hired an AD that wasn't going to start for another 2 1/2 months. In the most critical time of the changes in the college conference landscape, they hired someone and agreed to let her stay and finish out her current job. Dumb. They needed someone with clout that was going to walk in the door the next morning and immediately start lobbying the MVC, A-10 and anyone else that would listen.

Too bad they didn't make a move for some level of football. If they had they would have already moved up conferences.

All of that was all weird in how many pushed for Amanda Braun as the AD. That does worry me about Mike Lovell at Marquette.

IWB, do you suppose that UWM had much of a chance in the conference shuffle? I do not know that the A-10 would have considered them. I do know they were in the running for the MVC, along with Loyola, UIC, and Missouri-KC. Maybe having an AD going to bat for them would have put them over the top, but the impression I got was that Loyola just blew everybody else away, and they had the advantage of replacing a private school. I just do not see UWM as being that attractive a candidate.

I agree on both spots, but in reality, they should have had somebody fighting for them saying you don't need a 4th team from Illinois instead of saying, "Ah, screw it, we won't get in anyway, why don't you start a few months down the road?
