View Full Version : Marquette - St. John's Game Thread
Here we go - Senior Day. Thanks to Chris, Jamil, Jake & Davante.
Starting lineup - 4 seniors & Derrick.
St. John's wearing......Blue? WTH?

Where are the students? Seriously?
MU starts out with 6 pts in the paint. KEEP FEEDING THE POST!
Embarrassing. Senior day with the weakest student section I have seen all year including Christmas break. Maybe they are still cocktailing and will be
Chris and Davante combined for all 10 points.
Satchel Pierce and Philip Flory in the house today
MU with four early turnovers - need to clean that up!

Jamil with two wide open 3's and can't hit.
MU gets int the bonus with 6:50 left in the first half, that is a little later than their target, one of their team goals each week.

Well it's safe to say Burton is the top performing Marquette freshman. Dawson showed some moments. 3J a few less a Duane Wilson gets a pass because of the redshirt.
Al said it, "the best thing about freshman is they become sophomores."
MU down three with 6:50 left, St. John's has 3 more points than MU on turnovers - those were costly!

St. John's is so athletic. Jamil needs to get started. Thomas with a quiet game on "O" but getting boards and decent "D."
Jamil has had his open shots, can't knock 'em down. Correct Tulsa, Jake is getting it done on the other end, but not getting an inch of breathing room on offense.
Davante getting hammered time and time again down low with no calls.
Damn the Blue Storm is athletic.
I'm dying to ask D'Angelo Harrison.....
IS your girlfriend still in dance school or did you get a new girlfriend since high school?

Haven't seen Mayo for awhile. I think it's his D and decision making.
Mayo picked up two quick fouls, he'll see extended time in second half.

Glad the crowd finally showed up.
Fans showed up, students didn't. Almost zero students in upper deck.

Buzz needs to play Burton in the 2nd half. If that means Mayo plays over Thomas, so be it.

Please don't take this wrong but if Thomas doesn't have time to think he is a much better shooter.

Are the students on break? I was talking about the noise and hope it ramps up in the second half.

Thought that the one way we could stay in this game/win is if STJ plays dumb. They had two lazy turnovers, once on inbounding the ball and at the end with the outlet pass. Turns into big points for MU.

I think that's the case for many three point shooters. Catch and release is better than catch think and release. That buzzer beater was simply awesome.
Was interesting to see Todd running the point on the last play. I think those two early fouls really hurt. Hopefully he can stay out of foul trouble and be a difference maker in the second half.

Satchel Pierce is seeing a blueprint on what Buzz is hoping will can do for Marquette down the road.
Thanks - Sorry for bashing student attendance, didn't know they were on break.
Jake Thomas and Derrick Wilson combined for 6 rebounds in first half, in second half those two end up under the bucket on every St. John's possession fighting for anther.

Teams have combined for 31 assists so far. St. John's with 17 and MU with 14.

You can't go up and just throw it towards the hoop. TVV pointed out to me at halftime that he never goes up with two hands - always goes up with only one hand on the ball.
Unusual stats genius Andrew Gruman tells me that MU is 54-8 in home games that Chris Otule has appeared in.
St. John's just got a delay of game warning for hitting the ball after it goes through the hoop. They must be trained to do that as they are constantly batting the ball in the opposite direction. In first half ball goes out on St. John's and player is on floor - Otule goes to pick it up to give it to the ref and the St. John's player (Jordan?) kicked it across the baseline

Love the hustle and the pace. Exciting game.
MU still has too many turnovers. 9 as a team, Davante with 3 and Dawson with 2 in two minutes of play.

They are not used to playing this fast. Probably would have been better if they did though!
Exactly - with the athletes MU has, they should be playing more up tempo.
Derrick injury is a cramp - could see the muscle sticking out.
Unreal how much contact St. John's is allowed to get away with on made basket in-bounds plays.

Although St. Johns has better athletes, so this might not have been the game to pick to start playing uptempo.

Up 1, Jamil with a rebound, gives it up and next thing you know, SJU has gone on a 5-0 run to go up 4.
Hope that wasn't the play that turned the tide.
Sampson again with the proof. Out of bounds on St. John's, he holds the ball until the entire defense gets set and then gives it up. No warning from refs, no call....
MU leading in all of the hustle categories, St. John's just lights out shooting 54.5% for the game, MU shooting 47.8%
TulsaWarrior
03-08-2014, 02:03 PM
A tip of the hat to Derrick Wilson. Gutting it out with bad leg cramps.
St. John's pressure D is a lot to deal with. While Davante has been getting pounded on down low all day, Jake Thomas just got away with one on SJU's last possession.
While this team will never quit, Sampson's hoop may have just sealed the deal for MU.
Alan Bykowski, "brewcity77"
03-08-2014, 02:07 PM
SJU not missing anything open. Feel like MU has done a great job on Harrison, but Jordan and Sampson making up for it.
Agree 77 , they just don't miss.
St. John's is now 51.8% from field for game, 54.5% from 3pt.
MU will now be the 6th seed for Big East tourney.

Refs missed Sanchez hook.
Jordan just caught his own airball, then gets fouled on the putback?
Here we go MU - 8.3 left.... what you gonna do?
Alan Bykowski, "brewcity77"
03-08-2014, 02:32 PM
How was that not a travel?
St. John's gets away with a travel with 1.5 to go? That was crap, and that was Claugherty.
More people heading to the exits at the end of 1st OT - are you people high?

Refs have screwed us 3 times in last minute:
(1) Sanchez with the hook
(2) Jordan shoots, air ball, and catches it....no travel
(3) Sampson travels and would have allowed MU a potential final shot

Great game. Didn't like the playcall at the end of double ot though. Why draw up a play that puts it in the hands of your worst shooter? They also took their sweet time. Should have got an early look for Jake, Jamil or Davante and had time for a putback.

I feel like that was supposed to be Jamil's shot. If we wanted to drive why not put it in Burton's hand?
Wow. Sums up the year guys. Why he is shooting I have no idea. Can't believe it really.

Seemed like MU was surprised St. Johns went into a matchup zone. Jamil was to and NEEDS to take that shot. Passing it off to DWill is all on Jamil. Senior time, right there for you, take it! Don't give it up to the worst shooter on the team. Stunned silence at the end. Summed up the season, what could have been, but no.
Jamil was coming around the screen and got totally stuck - he had no options, Derrick was wide - that shot falls and it looks like an ingenious play. Just didn't happen.

Gardner was flashing open in the lane. I would rather take a chance there than passing to DWill.
If that shot falls, there is not enough emergency personnel available for the heart attacks from shock. There is a reason why St. Johns did not care about DWill on that play. They totally ignored him. The shot was not even close.

It was a great game. MU played very well. Overcame the early deficit. Back and forth all the way. Harrison with the killer 3 from deep. That, to me, was the difference.
Happy and proud of the way everyone played. DWill playing with cramps, Jamil on a bum ankle, Tood taking on to the knee. These guys gutted out and it was a fun game to watch. Never quit, down 6 with 11 to go in regulation. A lot to love about this game, but for the final score.

I just watched the play again. Jamil did not have a chance to shoot. Jake was coming free, but it would have been a deep 3. Gardner was the option.IMHO. DWill was wide, so that is where he went. Jamil did not really penetrate. The d was on him too quickly. Originally, I thought he was closer and had a better look. The lane, though, was fairly free as SJU had 3 players out near or past the 3 line.

If a shot does not touch the backboard or the rim, and was not deflected/blocked by the opposing team....and the player that shot it catches it, it is a travel.

Just looked it up. It is only now an automatic travel in the NBA. In college and high school, if the ref determines that it is a legit shot, travelling should not be called.

Wow, I think that is a terrible rule change. Ref has to try to determine intent instead of just calling what he sees.

I don't want to go back in the game thread but was I the only one that thought Mayo was fouled on that last possession of OT? He had a head of steam and then the defender basically bumped him hard off his line.....I mean is it only point of emphasis when its not the last play of the game?
It just seemed so obvious to me that it was a foul

They allowed the hard bump against MU most of the 2nd half. Jamil was bumped hard a couple of times, as was Todd. They called the cheap one on Jamil, but that was outside the lane.

I think so. Todd was POd as he threw the ball in the air after he got up.

Was looking at Roberts who was outside and he indicated with a hand signal that it was tipped, which it wasn't nor was it a legit shot attempt as he was out of control. This crew missed a lot of travels today. Lots of contact inside but let them play.

That's actually part of the problem I have. Game-to-game, you don't know what you are going to get. Some games, they let everything go. Some games they call it when you breathe on someone. Some games, they change how they ref from the first half to the second half to overtime. If it was like this every game, great, but it's been so inconsistent.
