goldenlegal22
03-04-2014, 09:29 PM
Watching any team play zone against us is just painful. We have the same option every time when we pass to the high post. If that doesn't work, then the offense just caves. Have to find another way around that if the entry pass isn't there and we seem to struggle with that.

Not sure why Buzz isn't using his hockey line substitutions against them like he did last time. That worked beautifully.

Only playing crappy on O. MU's defense has been very good.

I've never seen a team so scared to shoot the three. Jamil and Todd pass on more open threes in hopes of an inside look.
And man...Burton is a black hole. Can't believe he got an assist tonight. Of course, then he went up into 3 guys, so I guess that normalizes things.

And on cue, Mayo misses a deep 3 and Jamil hits a wide open one on the same set! Followed by another made 3 by Mayo on the next set.

goldenlegal22

Terrible D to end the half. Just let the guy come right down the middle and no one stopped ball. Can't give them those looks after fighting back to even it up.

Jake and Derrick with a donut in first half......
MUMac
03-04-2014, 09:58 PM
Not sure I understood the 3 attempt by Thomas. Not the shot itself, but the timing. Allowed PC to come down and take the lead at the half. You can't allow a team to get the last shot when you have the ball with 9 to go in the half.

Open look off an inbounds play. He hits that pretty consistently. Just missed it.

Yeah, but not sure why you are setting up the inbounds for a shot with that much time left on the clock. That was the point, not that Thomas took and missed a wide open 3.

03-04-2014, 10:02 PM
Defense got us back in this, kept us close enough so we could run back at them. Last 9 seconds were disappointing but I'll take a 2-point deficit. Was afraid they'd run away from us like 'Nova did.
goldenlegal22
03-04-2014, 10:10 PM
One of the best plays of not just that half but the whole season was seeing Dawson step in on the zone, split the top two and make a free throw jumper. Not only does that collapse the D and open up the wings for an open look, drive or dump down, it makes the D step up to respect that move and open the high post back up. If DWil could just step in and threaten a move like that, it would change the looks we get against a zone. He doesn't need to shoot it, but just make the move and a quick pass.

The frustrating part about watching us this year is how long it takes us to build leads or come back from deficits as opposed to how quickly our opponents go on runs. It seemed like Providence got their 10 point lead in a heartbeat, while it took us about 15 minutes to catch them. It is exhausting to watch.

03-04-2014, 10:16 PM
Last 9 seconds were disappointing but Jake had a decent look. What bugs me is that Marquette had a foul to give and should have fouled Henton as he moved close to midcourt.
By the way, when LaDonte Henton decommitted from Dayton when Brian Gregory left for Georgia Tech, I emailed Buzz and told him we should go after him immediatley. Buzz, responded to me, "Is he any good?". I think Buzz is finding out for himself this year just how good Henton is (14 pts 6 rebounds at the half). In the first game this year Henton had 18 pts and 5 rebounds against us.

I would really like to hear an explanation on that D.Wilson "offensive foul."
Live, it looked like he pushed off on the defensive player with his arm to open space for Thomas. Seeing the replay, it was incidental contact.

Is it my imagination or is Buzz micromanaging the offense more this year? It seems like everytime down the court he is calling a play.......Might just be a bi-product of the team he has this year
Yes, started doing that a few weeks ago. Not because of micro-managing, but because they needed to find ways to score because players weren't getting it done on their own.

Seems like every touch foul goes against us and Providence gets protected. They've had no depth for 2 years and it always seems the refs swallow the whistle when any Friars get in foul trouble.
We aren't losing because of that, it's poor execution on offense, but it sure seems like PU gets the benefit of the doubt to let their 6 guys play.

They usually do get better. However, in my opinion he should have been playing the youngsters since earlier in the season in a more prominent role, as they have upside and are the future. They would have improved, as would the team. Not a lot of upside in guys like Dwill and I don't see the benefit of continuing to put him out there.

Never blame the refs? Screw that. This was one of the worst called games I've ever seen. 2 fouls on PU in OT and one was freaking intentional. Desrosiers got away with BS all night. The refs lost us that game. Lots more the team could have done, but not near as much as the refs should have.

When would the TO made a difference? When Jake went into the fetal position instead of being strong with the ball, protecting it and forcing a foul? What coach would have called one on that play? No one that currently has a job.

I really tried to think of positives about DW throughout the year and after each bad game he came out and had a serviceable performance the next time out (a low T-A ratio, solid d, less bonehead plays). But after tonight's game I finally woke up and realized, those serviceable performances he had were mostly in part due to the other players on the team stepping up- Jake hit shots, Jamil gets a few to fall, etc. When those people don't score, his performance goes from serviceable to poor and in tonight's case, flat out awful. A true PG makes the players around him better, not the other way around. MU doesn't need a PG who can score (although it would be nice), it needs a PG who can elevate everyone's game and get the job done in crunch time whether that be a score, stop or smart pass. Derrick is simply not capable of doing that and the players around him are not good enough to mask his inefficiencies. Going to be breaking out the nightly and daily prayer for Dawson and Duane to be able to step in and do that next year while consistently playing solid D.

Refs weren't the only problem brew.
FIFY
We were called for 7 more fouls and in overtime Desrosiers got to pretty much mug people at will without getting called. Go watch that Gardner attempt again. Desrosiers hits him on the initial shot, the follow, the second follow, and finally gets called the fourth time. No way it wasn't a foul on Mayo. Were there problems with the team? Yes. There always are. But this was far from a down-the-middle game. Further, the refs completely changed how they were calling the game in OT on Marquette. Marquette was charged with 8 fouls in OT. Providence with 3, and one of those was the Fortune intentional. This game was not called the same at both ends in the extra frames. Especially when it came to Desrosiers.

Todd attacked the basket, got hacked by Desrosiers forcing him into a ridiculously awkward falling sideways shot, no call. Gardner got hit 4 times on one play, only on the fourth did they make the call. Otule got pounded under the hoop, no call. If you don't see it, you didn't have your TV on.
Todd was open. DWill bailed on him too early. I was not thrilled to see him inbound. Providence got the ball exactly where they wanted it to go.
And why was he inbounding? Sure because he is a good passer, but also because he shoots free throws at the level of a 4th grader. Maybe Jamil Wilson should have been passing in and Wilson not even in the game.
And Burton attacking the rim in one of the OT's would have been nice also with all of the foul trouble they had.
This sucks.

There was lots of other dumb. Derrick's travel and his fifth foul. Todd fouling Fortune on two threes in the same exact spot. Todd letting Cotton get the easy steal. More ill-advised off-balance shots than you can shake a stick at. Passing up on wide open threes to drive into three defenders. I'm not saying we didn't make mistakes. But we had points taken off the board by no-calls at the Providence defensive end. In a one-point game, it all matters, and not calling Desrosiers' multiple fouls or the Harris push in the back on Jake before Cotton tied him up is just as significant as the dumb plays we made.

Derrick is an outstanding young man and a great teammate and a great practice guy, but he has serious limitations. He really needs to come off the bench next year unless Duane and John can't do it. Juan as well. Senior leaders, but real questions as to being high levels players. We shall see.

Agree with you nuk. To add to it though buzz has to learn to trust the young kids to develop throughout the season even if it means they take their lumps a bit early on. Unfortunately bc of the lack of experience from our young guys this year we're looking at Dw as really the only guy returning with consistent mins from the previous year.

What I am constantly reminded of when I look at him (and this might be my east coast upbringing so I'm not sure it will resonate with many people) is that Derrick is like Eric Snow from the late 90s, early 00s 76ers. The guy averages close to 7 assists a game with 2 TOs for his career with the 76ers and AI but when he goes to two others teams, he finishes his career with 3.9 to 1.2 and then 1.9 to .8. Part of that is probably due to his minutes going down (especially in his last 3 seasons) but I think the major part is that he was a role player at best UNLESS he had someone like AI who could do the work for him.
Basically, that's a long winded way of saying, Derrick can be a great defensive stopper and make occasional plays on offense, but he can't do it as a 30+ or maybe even 20+ minutes per game. From everything I've heard he seems like a true team guy and buys into Buzz's system 100%, but I think he would best serve this team next year as role player (like he was before) and a defensive mentor to the young guys.

I think next year has the potential to be an exciting year, if Buzz isn't stubborn and doesn't stick with Dwill. Team may come out of the gate slow, but I think you just let the young guys play and improve, and the team will peak towards the end of the year. If Dwill starts, I predict about a 7-11 record in conference.
