View Full Version : MU - Creighton
Starting lineup - Derrick, Jake, Juan, Jamil, CO2.
Weak crowd, no students in upper deck?
Jake takes a charge from McDermoitt - huge
Buzz not happy about the possession call, moving from ref to ref to complain.

John Hammond sitting 2nd row next to Boyle.
Hammond was in the media room before the game with Giannis Antetokounempo - also, OJ Mayo just walked in.
Scottie Pippin also in the house as is Zaza Pechiula
How did that look on TV? No replays in BC....
Lack of posts make me feel as lonely as the students in the upper deck.
Give Artino a grammy or call him for flopping, that was a joke.
Refs continue to amaze - last call on Derrick was unreal - Buzz so shocked he didn't even join team in huddle.
Gibbs is almost a full year older than Chris Otule.

So which of these zebras is Jim Burr in disguise?
Creighton has it all - They can shoot from everywhere on the floor and they are one of the best passing teams I have seen in a while - their ball movement is beyond good. McDermott with 15 in the second half, kid knows when to turn it on. He is beyond college good, his skills will translate the the NBA game.

To have a chance, we needed to be able to out-physical this team. The refs called every minor touch, including some that didn't happen, which meant winning physical went out the window.
Agree, refs were beyond brutal, but in the end Creighton is just too damn good.
Doesn't look too good for them next year though, they lose just about everybody.
Final - Creighton 85, Marquette 70
Whenever CU needed a bucket, McD delivered. MU took 36 free throws and missed 16 of them. You just cannot make defensive lapses against CU and MU was making them on every possession. Curtains.

Can't even be mad about this one, we gave a great effort, them dropping 3's (well all their shots really) like they did (62.2% - 2, 52.2% - 3 and 77.3% FT), my buddy said it best, Creighton is really the only team that can beat Creighton....just hope they don't go cold in the tourney and have a good showing for the Big East's conference sake.

Needed to shoot at a high percentage tonight from everywhere and didn't. FT line really killed us.
Mayo was disappointing tonight. Some ill advised shots.
Refs were brutal both ways. 23 foul calls in the first 11 1/2 minutes.
The ticky tack calls on Jamil but McDermott gets away with alot. Frustrating.
Oh, and Creighton is good......

And I can't wait. Their fans by us were as bad as any visiting fans I've seen outside of Louisville. Way too big for their britches.

The second half reffing was the worst I've seen all year. We still would've lost, but there was absolutely now flow to the game whatsoever. I think Homer said there was a foul every 11 seconds that seems exaggerated but it was exasperating to watch.

Worst fans I've ever seen. First time I've seen MPD have to escort fans out. In addition, one of the fans that was escorted out was allowed back in and as he returned tried talking smack to me. Never been so irritated with rival fans.

Buzz refused to comment about them---says a lot the way he said it. The white, southern guy is one of the worst. Mentioned that to Mrs. Gato and our usher before the game. He did not disappoint. A little star struck by McDermott if you ask me. McDermott likes to create separation with a little forearm and they let it go all night.

Creighton should be a FF team this year...unless they're in the same region as Florida. Good for the Big East!

Creighton can get beat at the rim. They do not leave the floor. I think Buzz had that in the game plan but the problem with the execution was that Creighton hit threes--even when a hand was in the shooters face, esp. Wragge. To beat them, go inside and elevate. They cannot block a shot. Todd certainly knew that but just could not finish. If they have a reasonable 3 point % we had a good shot to win it. They started the game 6 for 7 from three. It was over at that point. They can be beat and shouldn't be too cocky.

Jamil got in the way of one of those forearm shivers and was called for the foul 30 feet away from the basket. Brutal call. One of many. What pisses me off the most was every single timeout, a ref was standing around chatting with Dougie, laughing it nup. Was waiting for one of those turds to pull out a pen and paper and ask for his autograph. Creighton is damn good. They better not sh!t the bed in the tourney.

that was a really good team. I thought we played well overall (except the FT and 3pt shooting), but we just could not stop them. they put up 85 and I thought we did a reasonable job on d. I just can not believe wragge. He is not shooting regular threes. He shoots them deep and with a hand in his face and is generally not even close to missing. What a nice weapon to help open up the court for McDermott. Win out or win the big east tourney from here. Either way, that is a tough road to travel. I am ok with the fans being a bit edgy. We may need a bit of that in the big east. One thing is for sure, I would rather have a passionate fan base, even if there are some a$%holes, in the conference then the ones that follow DePaul and seton hall. How many fans attended the mu/seton hall game? that looked like a hs game. I will take their fan base. Hats off to Creighton for a well deserved win.

There's a line. I go to a few away games every year, and have never had a problem. I'm as passionate of a fan as anyone.
The ones I had to deal with were taunting MU fans around them, yelled about Davante being a "fat f*ck" or "fat ass" every time he touched the ball, and got aggressive and profane when they were called on it.
I'm all for visiting fans cheering on their team. It makes things fun. But if that's what you want from visiting fans, you can have my tickets.

Their response was ridiculous. Two grown men screaming profanities and waving their middle fingers while the other Creighton fans yelled out their support of the behavior. If MPD hadn't shown up, I honestly think that scene could have got very ugly.
But to be fair, Creighton's fans probably know this is their only chance to be pompous asses. Next year, Creighton is the new Butler.

agreed mufan12. can't stand fans like that, however I think every fan base has jerks like that. doesn't make it right, but hard for me judge an entire fan base off of the comments of a few idiots. maybe I have just become jaded by the scoop board, but after watching comments over there, I am sure some of those would act the same way at a Creighton game. If, those few fans that you are referring too truly represent then majority of fans, then I agree with you, but I am guessing they are outliers. Either way, I can appreciate you being pissed at those dumba$%s.

The student crowd did go 40% filled in the upper deck. That didn't happen untill 7:30pm and half way thru the 1st half. The general public crowd was filling in about 7:20pm. I don't understand why people show up late. This is college basketball. It's the shortest game in all sports, as it's a 2 hour game. People walk in like it's the bottom of the 1st inning.
That said, I think the place would've went nuts if MU could've taken the lead. Fans were really into the game, when MU pulled within 5 points.

Damn that long McDermott three at the end of the shot clock was a dagger. Played great defense that possession, and the player of the year just throws in a 26 footer. That play, and the Mayo turnover in transition that immediately became a Chatman three broke our backs. Creighton is just a great offensive team that makes you pay for any mistake and can score efficiently in both transition and the half-court. Also, what separates them from a Wisconsin is that they can also can get buckets inside (from McDermott and their guards penetrating).

I was remarkably calm last night because I never really thought we were going to win that game. Creighton is a senior-laden team and they play very smart. Unless they simply don't hit their shots, there is not a chance Marquette beats them.

Me too. Watching the game, it was evident that Creighton was the much better team. I think MU could have done some things outside the norm that would give them a chance, but I can see how Buzz probably wanted to stay the course. On defense, Buzz played them straight up and overplayed all of over the court. I thought that was a mistake. I would have let anyone but Wragge and McD beat you. Force Gibbs into shooting jumpers. If he makes them, fine. But, as it was, Creighton simply had McD pick Wilson or Mayo causing MU to switch or had Wragge pick and step back. Those 2 ended up shooting 75% combined and scored a majority of Creighton's points. I thought it might be interesting if MU would have gone to a triangle and two (has anyone played it in 20 years?). I would have put a guard on Wragge (ala Miller on Kleinschmidt) and JW on McD and let the other beat you. If Wragge or McD go underneath, you could double with your zone guys. At least it would take the ball out of Wragge's and McD's hands. I can understand Buzz playing it straight up. He needs to beat GT, DePaul, PC and STJ to have any chance at the NCAAs and you can't play gimmicks against them.
Buzz did play around a bit on offense. It was clear that no one on Creighton (Wragge, McD or Gibbs) could guard Burton one-on-one. Unfortunately, Burton picked up a series of quick fouls which ended that experiment. Derrick Wilson's lack of shooting ability really hurt them last night. Creighton isn't a good defensive team, but they had a good plan. For most possessions they would have 3-4 guys in the lane and didn't guard DW unless he tried to penetrate. MU could still get in the lane by driving the ball, which speaks to how bad Creighton is on D, but Gardner was completely taken out of the game. The lack of shooters really was evident last night.
Lastly, the refs were especially poor last night. McD really uses his arms and body to create space. If Burton would play like that, he would have fouled out in under a minute. As it soon, he and JW did pick up 3 fouls in 3 minute span. Wragge is a hack on D. He could have another 5 or 6 fouls called on him.

The foul on Jamil when DM shot and fell down on the base line was a joke……Jamil never touched him…..but really you are not going to beat a team when they shoot 62% from the floor and 50% from 3 very often…….you have to have some extreme fire power to do that and obviously we don’t have that this year.
Amazing that teams had gone away from sagging off of Derrick and Juan the last few games……Creighton again showed how easy it is to take away Gardner by just surrounding him with 2 and sometimes 3 players even before he had the ball……..They just face guarded Jake and took their chances on the other guys. Jamil needed to hit a couple of early 3’s but couldn’t……..I thought Mayo taking that quick 3 when we had cut it to 5 was a big momentum shift for them.
If he hits it the crowd goes nuts and I imagine Creighton calls a time out but I didn’t like the shot at the time but I guess he has earned the right to take a bad one once in a while

Couldn't believe when they called a foul on Wragge and announced it was his 1st foul. We all looked at each other and said-- How is that even possible! Had a legit 4-5 fouls in the 1st half alone.

From my perspective, it started with the two Jays fans heckling Gardner. "Go home fat boy", "Fat ass", "Fat f***". As I said, some kids in the section, it was just really inappropriate.
The MU fan in the sweater vest turned and told them to knock it off. Nothing rude or disrespectful, just pointing out their behavior and calling them out to stop. The CU fans turned their venom at him, cursing and waving their fingers. Instead of continuing, the MU fan tried to get an usher's attention, but she wasn't listening.
I'm at the front of that section, so I called the usher over and told her they were being obnoxious, swearing, and antagonizing fans. That usher went up and it sounded like they were giving her some crap too. Suddenly reinforcements came by me, at least 8-10 ushers/security and a MPD officer. Those two were escorted out by the cop. Security also talked to the MU fan (as Creighton fans continued to yell and point at him) but at least a couple of us spoke to security on his behalf.
At least one of the two antagonists was let back in the second half, I was griping to my wife about the refs mass foul calls and lack of flow as he walked by and he said something, but I ignored him and there didn't seem to be much trouble after that.

I really didn’t write my post very well….I meant before last night……Creighton went back to what was giving us problems ..for whatever reason other teams hadn’t been doing that as much the last few games. I thought Buzz had it figured out but I guess not……..Sure would make a difference if Todd and Jamil were hitting from outside…then they have to pick their poison….clearly that was not a decision they had to make last night.
