OT: Texas Athletic Budget

Texas makes more than anyone else, yet if it weren't for donations they would be in the red.

Revenue: $165.7 million (of which $37.4 million was donations)
Expenses: $146.8 million

Looks like income of $18.9 million, of which they transferred $9.2 million of their operating surplus to the university.

Here is another take on the numbers - Texas made $128.3 million in non donation revenue, which was short $18.5 million when compared to expenses of $146.8 million.

Yep, need to start paying student athletes. Texas has approximately 600 student athletes. How much do they want to pay student athletes? $5,000 per year? That's another $3 million per year.

If they have 600 student athletes, then the athletic department spent an amount that is equal to $244,667 per athlete, not schollarship athlete, just athlete.

The $400 million ND is spending on the their stadium expansion and modernization took me aback as well. That is about the same as MU's entire endowment - yikes! Speaking of Texas, they too have academic buildings sidling up to the their stadium.

ND's project looks very impressive, but man, that's a lot of dough.

Old article, but it does present some of the college stadium upgrades and costs. And to think we can't get anything done for a new Milwaukee basketball facility. I guess college football is king.

Yeah...how would they ever be able to manage a 1.5% increase in expenses? If anything, this highlights the absurdity of it.

I have to think these guys are all leveraged to the hilt, they have to assume a bunch of things like increased revenue and donations. Look at Maryland, a few bad seasons and their athletic dept. was in the red. I'd hate to be Texas or ND if a few donors and a few season ticket holders stop answering the phone when things aren't going well.

Yes Sultan, a 1.5% increase sounds paltry, but when you are hemorrhaging money, an extra $3 million is nothing to sneeze at.

No, but it's a matter of priorities. They are certainly making enough money to afford $3M, they are just choosing to spend it elsewhere. I mean, that's less then they are paying Charlie Strong. Now of course we are just picking on Texas here, but this is exactly what I mean by the disconnect. 20 years ago it was more manageable. Now when coaches are getting paid what they are getting paid, and when you see what is being built (like at ND), it is hard for me to consider $3M that big of a deal.
