Buzz probably wants to keep a fresh player on their shooter. When we get back from the 12 minute timeout I'd expect Derrick back in.

If Marshall out for 2nd half we are in good shape. Todd needs to get it together. Burton in and Todd out rather than Derrick for last play should light a fire.

Seems like we should be up by double digits but I'll take it....too many silly turnovers and Butler for some reason is allowing Garndner to beat them.....I just don't get it....didn't they watch the seton hall tape?
Great defensive job by Derrick on Dunham......

We need Todd to get it straight in the second half. Wouldn't mind a screen or two for Jake.

Dawson and Burton looking really bad in the 1st half. Todd with the Jekyll and Hyde also. Could be a huge break if Marshall can't come back. Didn't look good. Did Burr ref the 1st game ever at Hinkle??? MFer.

Thought the exact same thing. Good first half, Butler can't handle Gardner and when they do double inside Jamil was able to make them pay outside.

Derrick's defense today has been superb. There are two things that bother me about watching MU this year.
First, why is Davante the trailer? That was always a fairly large part of our offense with Jae and others because of his ability to bury one from deep. Jamil really needs to have that part in the offense.
The second is Davante doesn't seem to screen, ever. Really pisses me odd watching him without the ball in his hands.

Really? You realize Butler's entire defensive focus is keeping the ball from getting to Gardner in the paint, right? The strategy isn't to go away from Gardner, it's the defense that took it away.

At 40-28 we played like the game was over. I'm not sure if it's the players or the coaching staff that let us down more. If they just play below average basketball, we win handily.
This game reminds me of that train wreck at Louisville. Yes, the time was different, but in that one, the team didn't have a chance to respond. In this one, we did time and time again and just failed to answer the bell. Ill-advised shots, no desire to get the ball inside, and our "leaders" seemed helpless. It was like UL in slow-mo. Pathetic.

The pieces just don't fit this year. Kind of a shame since we have potentially the best front court we have had in several years. The guards try hard, but they are just not talented enough to play at this level. Jamil has been an enigma. We have too many guys with the same skill set. Need some guys who can actually shoot consistently. These offensive droughts are killers.

Do you know what happened at 40-28? We started subbing.
the bench was beyond godawful today. Todd Mayo is so ridiculously inconsistent. His only four points were in garbage time, and he had some wide open looks. Juan...Deonte...Dawson...provided nothing all all.

Davante barely touched the ball because he was rarely in the paint. He needs to realize he isn't a PG/SG.

All the more reason I'm not sure whether it was the staff or players that disappointed me more. Starters did get back in and not produce, but what was left, 16 minutes? You don't start subbing on the road with a 12 point lead and 16 minutes to play. 5 minutes? Maybe. 2 minutes? Yeah, I'll definitely agree with that. But 16? Against a team that has fought back constantly at home to make games competitive? Pathetic.

They weren't mass subbing...but subbing within the flow of the game. I will have to check out the statsheet but I think all they did was bring in Mayo for Thomas and Deonte for Otule. (I think I'm wrong about the last one.) Nothing outrageous.

I still think the frontcourt is more of a problem than the backcourt. At least the guards are doing what they are supposed to do. Not really the case for Jamil, Davante, and the other guys up front. Every time Jamil disappears or Davante starts calling for the ball at the top of the key I just cringe. That's what's killing us, their inability to enforce their will on the game for 40 minutes.

Jake Thomas went 1-8, all from 3, and Todd went 2-9 (0-6 from 3). At best our guards are inconsistent. At worst, like our two-guards were today, they are a dumpster fire.

I'm not talking about today, I'm talking about in general, and more Jake and Derrick (the starters) than all the guards. Derrick is mostly protecting the ball and not giving the game away. Jake is generally hitting threes and playing good defense. Todd...well, he's a coin flip. Heads he's great, tails he sucks

I was really bothered to see MU start settling for 3's. When Butler started to make their run, Jamil and Mayo took 3's early in the shot clock and clanked them. There was no offensive flow. A lot of standing around the 3 point line.

In past years DJO, Junior, JB or Vander would beat somebody olff the dribble...get into the lane and make something happen..score or get fouled....pass it to a teammate for an open look.......Jake can't do that...Derrick tries .....Jamil doesn't really do that....Mayo can do it at times but if he forces it tends to get out of control and take a bad shot....
I just don't think we have the horses to do what Buzz likes his teams to do this year......

yep. That is spot on and what I have felt this year. Jake can start with a Junior at PG. Derrick can start with a DJO or Vander at the 2 spot. Unfortunately, Jake and Derrick together are not a good combination. Buzz mentioned it before the season started that the guard play will be different this year. This is what he was referring to, I believe.
