MU - New Hampshire game thread.

One change to starting lineup and that is Juan in place of Steve Taylor.

Chris Pelcher for NH averages 16 rebs per game coming in, will give our bigs a good battle.

I think Buzz is onto something. Outside the box.

IWB

Referees for tonight Evon Burroughs, Terry Oglesby and.......Brian O'Connell. Not a fan of O'Connell.

Bo Ellis is courtside with Craig Kasten tonight.

A few recruits in the house, will have to see who.

TulsaWarrior

MU will wear this team donw with all the subs.

Buzz certainly mixing it up tonight. Massive substitutions, first two subs in were Davante & Jajuan. Davante in and back out quick.

One lineup included 1 SG, 3 SFs & Davante. Jamil at the point, Jajuan at the 2, Juan at the 3, Burton at the 4 and Davante at the 5.

Lets of mixing and matching for MU.

IWB
11-21-2013, 08:28 PM
Dawson in - really has a high motor. Not the defender that Derrick is, but he really keeps it moving.

IWB
11-21-2013, 08:30 PM
Zerg - I was thinking the same thing. Talking to Andrew Gruman about it as we were wondering if he had done something wrong and was being punished for it. When he came in I decided no, but came in at the 10:00 mark. Hmm...10:00 minute mark.

Buzz sending 5 guys to the table.

At the 17:46 mark MU is up 20-5.
MU leads rebounds 17-10.
14 points in the paint.
6 fast break points.

MU needs that.

Flip side, the poor 3 pt shooting continues. Andrew Gruman tells me MU is 2 for their last 27 threes. (1-8 tonight)

IWB
11-21-2013, 08:37 PM
Yes - his off hand spins to the side.

Last foul on Jamil Wilson - very poor. He was 2 ft from the guy, player simply lost the ball.

Davante with an off night. Mr. Auto-Matic is 1-4 from the charity stripe, 0-1 from the field. He has 2 turnovers, 1 point and 0 rebounds.

Wow, we are looking like the same offense that we had against OSU.

IWB
11-21-2013, 08:51 PM

Pretty hard to hold teams to 40 points......you can play good defense and teams can still hit shots on you....at some point you have to be able to score the ball.

I've got to stop watching us play. I watches the OSU game and we all know how that turned out. Tonight, I joined in progress when it was 20-5. It's got to be me.

IWB
11-21-2013, 09:15 PM
No question - this will be tougher than the Cubillan-Acker year where they played small ball. Crazy - how can you get over the poor shooting? While 27% from the field in the first half is much better than last weekend, they still need to improve - in a big way.

Two NBA talented women just walked into the arena. I know, who cares, right? Well - its better than what I'm seeing on the court.

Marquette's shooting is not just off, it is way off. I think Devante was lucky to graze the rim from the FT line. Jamil really needs to step up his play. Pretty uninspiring game to watch. Glad I could not make the trip over today.

Markedman
11-21-2013, 09:35 PM
Outside of Mayo we really have nobody that can create his own shot.

Gardner seems to miss Junior and Vander......He just hasn't been the same this year.

We have to be the worst 3 point shooting team in the country to this point don't we?

I like the line up of Jamil, Todd and Mayo in the backcourt. Spell them with Juan and Derrick. Of all the freshmen, Deonte is playing the best. Put him in a front line rotation with Davante, Chris and Taylor.

warriorfan4life

I was hoping to see a little more today, though D remains mostly solid. Still like the parts and still think they can come together. We are not going to be pretty, but we often won ugly last year and I trust that Buzz grinds a good number of wins again. Easy to doubt, harder to have faith.

Markedman
11-21-2013, 10:26 PM
I guess the difference is I don't like the pieces...... the pieces don't fit. IMO

Buzz playing Jamil at the point for most of the 2nd half tells you that he is really searching for anything......

Shot faking and passing it wround the perimeter isn't an offense......unless they find some shooters this team will be very easy to defend.

kneelb4zerg
11-21-2013, 10:34 PM
Like last year, there is no way the formula for success involves launching 22 three. Have to think Buzz understands this and will find a way to fix it.

Would also help if Davante stopped playing like a space cadet.

I predicted 24-7, 14-4 to start the year and will stick to that prediction until proven otherwise (and a four game sample is not nearly enough for me). I doubted in the team and Buzz last year and was proven wrong.

Also, for people that watched the game, they saw a solid start where we pounded it inside and played stifling D. Got sloppier as the game went on, and they threw a few threes in the make the score close at the end.

As soon as they switched to zone the game changed......

I liked some of the things the team did against the zone, particularly Jamil in the high post and Mayo's slashng. Gardner was ineffective as the roamer in the middle. I think this team could be better against zones once a few shots go in. Wenzel was not exactly in March form, but one good point he made was that a zone gives Marquette space that our guards struggle to create on their own.

I remember going bananas when faced with the Maurice Acker-David Cubillan setup and wondering if we could win any conference games with them. I think Mayo-Jake-Jamil will gel and we'll be fine. Hell, we scored 114 points two weeks ago. It's...gonna...be...fine.

I hear you, but I saw Jake playing well, not afraid to shoot, and his teammates passing to him. Mayo's ability to elevate in the lane is like Dominic with a better shot. They just need o recover from losing so much of last year's scoring

MUfan12
11-22-2013, 12:23 AM
This team isn't good. They're not terribly skilled, and right now, the effort is subpar. Bad combination.

The outside shooting isn't an aberration. They are a poor shooting team, which makes them easy to defend. And when you put them on the line, they miss.

You can't say "they'll be fine" because of past years. Each year is a new house, as Buzz likes to say. And this house has enough bricks for an addition.

We sound like Badger fans. They always have a bad loss or two early (two straight years to us), fans start writing the obituary, then somehow they manage to get better and make the tourney. When it happens year after year, at some point, you have to be patient. If we still suck in January, then I'll panic.

warriorfan4life
11-22-2013, 12:50 AM
The offense has not been good, mostly because of taking too many perimeter shots without ever getting it inside. This team will never be Creighton on offense, but there is no Novak that has a green light to take the first semi-open look. If the team takes an open perimeter look, it should be because the ball has already made it in inside and passed back out. However, even with personnel that has yet to mesh on offense, I trust Buzz to get that together. His offenses here have finished in the top 25 of offensive efficiency in four of his five seasons as head coach. The one year the offense did not finish in the top 25, the defense ranked ninth overall in defensive efficiency and we made the Sweet 16 and won 14 Big East games.

I do not think effort is the problem, even though New Hampshire beat us to too many 50-50 balls. We have only given up 179 points in 217 possessions going into tonight, and gave up 53 points in a game around 65 possessions tonight. With our size, we should be an excellent defensive team, and have been that so far. That alone will keep us in most every game until the offense comes together. If and when the offense gets going like it usually does under Buzz, we will be as good a I believe we can be (and that bandwagon is getting awfully lonely). It may not be pretty, and looks exactly like the Big Ten basketball we have always had made fun of, but the D needs to be our constant until we find an offensive rhythm.

Davante is playing like an idiot. At the B&G luncheon, Buzz said that Davante had 'senioritis'. I see exactly what he meant by that.

Did you see Davante near midcourt last night on an inbounds play just standing there, 40 feet from the baseline, right next to the sideline, fending off a smaller defender with one hand while asking for the ball with the other hand. Never moved an inch. We had to call a time out because we couldn't get the ball in. And then Davante goes and bitches to whoever it was that was inbounding the ball, like it was that guys fault. I told my wife I think I'm gonna get tossed, cuz I'm going out there to hit Davante upside his head! He better get his sh!!!t together or this is going to be a long season.
