Get rowdy! This may be the best opponent we play at home all season

I really want to win today, primarily to keep the home winning streak going and to put a statement win on the board for the Big East. Not expecting to win, as this is a tough match-up for a retooled backcourt and Ohio State is ready to win big games now. I think the teams will be pretty equal come March, and I can envision us winning today, but it will only be disheartening if we are run out of the building.

Go Warriors!!!
Students are ready - MU's Gold N Blues acapella group was singing national anthem and student section took over in force. Team was facing mid court with their heads bowed, and as soon as the students took it over, one by one the players all lifted their heads with huge smiles. As the anthem came to a close, Jajuan Johnson had his arm up pointing at the student section. Pretty impressive.
Game on....
Starting lineup - Derek Wilson, Jake Thomas, Steve Taylor Jr., Jamil Wilson, Chris Otule.....
Officials: Jim Burr? Say it ain't so!! Will get the other two in a moment
Refs are active early - 28 seconds in and we have an OSU touch foul and a 3 in the lane on MU
Those at home - we had nop replay, what was call on Derek?
Slow internet with so many people connected - other two refs are Ed Corbett and Bo Boroski.
At the 11:55 mark MU up 7-5
MU up on the glass 11-9
MU 1-6 from three, need to get better shots - guys still have the jitters.
4 turnovers and 4 fouls, MU needs to keep that in check
Never really been a fan of official Bo Borowski, but man does he scan the student section at every stop in the action.

Two defensive teams at the beginning of the year, so it is to be expected.
I'm not sure this is the place for John Dawson, but boy they need some movement on offense.

I like the fact that Dwill has taken it to the hoop a few times. He has been very sloppy with the ball though. I think point guard play is going to be our major issue this year.
Diamond Stone in the house today
Painful is right - at the 7:51 mark MU is 3-17 from field, OSU is 5-19. Both teams combine for 2-12 from three.
Rebounding battle is tied at 15.
Burton is earning his minutes
Guys - feel free to comment on TV action, we are getting NO replays at BC.
Mu is getting hammered going to the hoop - Jake got hit, Steve got hit twice, and they call Davante for the ass-check? Poor.
TulsaWarrior
11-16-2013, 01:47 PM
Marquette showing some nice intensity.
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 01:49 PM
Not a good sequence for Jake. Terrible off balance three. Then drives to the hoop and tries a scoop shot. Looks like he got fouled on the scoop though. The charge on Davante was questionable.
at 3:01 mark, Derrick Wilson & Aaron Craft have yet to come out of the game. No question that players on both teams are gassed. Bradley Center is up for grabs - last possession may have been the loudest I have ever heard this place. Great job MU fans!
3 minutes to go in the half and the leading scorer for both teams has 5 pts - did not see that coming. Todd Mayo & Lenzelle Smith.
Buzz just got his first warning for being too far out on the court - warranted, even though it was a stop in action, he was damn near mid court.

Another thought and this has been beat to death, but Vander would be having a field day with these new rules. With his quick first step, he would be at the line constantly.
Jake Thomas took a charge - no question, but no call.
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 02:20 PM
What happenned to that great defense we saw in the first half?
OSU is attacking the bench side of the lane - sealing off our post with no help from the side. MU has got to help on D.
TedBaxter
11-16-2013, 02:21 PM
Time to bring John Dawson in.
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 02:23 PM
I'm sorry! I have criticized Dwill for not being an offensive threat in the past. Now he is trying to be one and he just isn't! This team will go as far as the point guard takes them! Get healthy soon Duane! He has also been sloppy with the ball, and his defense is not making up for the lack of offensive ability.

MU owning the boards but way too many turnovers.
Rebounds MU 32-24
Turnovers MU 12, OSU 8
MU's shooting is very poor, 20.7% in first half, 22.2% in 2nd half, 21% overall.
Dawson might be a better point than Duane.
This was true before the injury.

Marquette looks like a young team. A deer in the headlights right now. Need to work it inside at least once on every possession.
Exactly right Tulsa - state of panic.
Aaron Craft and Derrick Wilson have still not come out of the game.
Points in paint - OSU 20-14
Points off of T/Os - OSU 10-4
2nd chance points - MU 7-0
Fast Break points - OSU 14-0
Bench points MU - 17-7

Our guard play overall has just been terrible today. I have already railed on Dwill, but Mayo is playing poorly, and Jake Thomas in two years has only hit about 4 shots.
TedBaxter
11-16-2013, 02:45 PM
I know Buzz doesn't want to put Dawson and Johnson in against an experienced team this early, but why wait? You don't have the scoring at the guard right now and at least Dawson can feed the post and Johnson may be able to create a little.
TulsaWarrior
11-16-2013, 02:48 PM
Burton seems to be the only freshman Buzz seems to trust in a big game. I sure hope that will change. I wonder if Duane Wilson would have brought some firepower in this game. A lot on Derrick Wilson's shoulders right now.
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 02:49 PM
I would like to see Dwill go back to his role as a backup point guard and spot minute defensive specialist. This team will be limited in my opinion while he is running the show. I think there is not much upside to continue playing him. I would rather take my lumps in games like this with the freshman, as they will improve, and the team will improve as we go through the season. Dwill can get a little better in my opinion, but I don't think he has the upside of Dawson or Duane when healthy.
I knew that Jim Burr was the king of the double technical, but a double foul?
MU is still killing them on the glass, but up to 15 turnovers and shooting 19.1% from the field for the game.
I don't know that Deonte's PT is a trust thing as much as it is keeping Davante & Chris out of foul trouble.
MU with only 9 made field goals on the game. I don't know if I remember a shooting performance this bad - ever.

This game will get the player's attention. A learning experience on national TV. Guard play has to develop. JWilson has to a leader and Anderson needs to become Trent Lockett.
TedBaxter
11-16-2013, 02:55 PM
The guard play isn't going to get a whole lot better unless Buzz starts playing the young guys. Sorry, Derrick and Jake are not high major starting guards.

I had a feeling that this is how this game was going to play out. I was actually encouraged in the first half because we were playing good defense, and the game was much closer than I expected it to be.

11-16-2013, 02:59 PM
Well, the DWill experiment needs to end.
Hard to pin this on Derrick - MU has 18 turnovers, only 2 are his. MU is also 9-50 from the field, can't pin all of that on Derrick either.
Finally got Craft on a traveling call. He has been getting away with small travels the entire game.
Bradley Center clearing out pretty fast.
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 03:06 PM
Yes, lots went wrong today, but it all starts with the PG. He seems indecisive, seems a tick late with his passes, not hitting guys in rythym, not playing overly good defense, is probably exhausted, and is not an offensive threat. I think he is better in short doses when he can focus on defense.
TedBaxter
11-16-2013, 03:06 PM
Yes, but the point guard is the one that sets the tempo and everything else on offense. Marquette got dominated at the guard today and I just don't see the potential there to improve with who Buzz played today.
TulsaWarrior
11-16-2013, 03:06 PM

Well that was about as ugly as you can get - 35 points.
10-53 from the field.
20 turnovers
1-18 from 3pt
mufansince72
11-16-2013, 03:10 PM
I'd like to see heavy minutes from Dawson and JuJuan going forward. I would rather take my lumps with the freshman and improve as the season goes along. Dwill and Jake are not a high level D1 starting back court.
Not really disagreeing about the PG play, as I noted a few issues the last two games, just saying this was a horrible effort all the way around.
As poor as the officiating was today (in my opinion) they called 19 on OSU and 18 on MU - overall with the new rules in place, that wasn't bad.
Not close to a top 25 team right now.
Agree completely. I think they can be a top 25 team, but are not even close right now.
mufansince72

PG play was the first thing that jumped out at me in the first two games against the bunnies. I was extremely worried that this would happen against a good team.

I also keep hearing how great a shooter Jake Thomas is. Someone posted something today how he hit 40 of 50 or something ridiculous in pregame from three. Other than a few baskets against the worst team in D1 history (Grambling), I have not seen anything from him to think he deserves to be on the floor in a year and 3 games.

TheSultan
11-16-2013, 03:31 PM
I'm not saying the Derrick Wilson is an elite PG by any means, but he did get the ball to players with a chance to score. I am fine with experimenting more with Dawson, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that is going to turn a poor outside shooting team into a good one.
And I don't know what to say anymore about Jamil. He's not quick enough to drive on anyone...he's too inconsistent from the outside...he still doesn't physically mix it up in the lane.

11-16-2013, 03:33 PM
Just left the BC. Not one guard played well. DWill's 2 three misses and Jake's miss from 3 early started the blowout. Really disappointed in all the guards. As bad as I have seen guard play from Marquette. I agree with the comments on DWill. He played poorly. No offensive flow and that falls on him. If I see he or Jake double pump in traffic again, I may scream. What bothered me most was how poorly those two phases the ball.
That said Steve Taylor needs more minutes. I need Jamil would assert and take over.
Are the freshman this bad that they can't play when our guard play was killing us?
All in all, a really bad overall performance.

We were not against Florida last year either. We will take another 2-3 non-conference losses, Buzz will have them ready by Big East play, and we will be a very tough out come March. We will succcessfully overcome the loss of Vander later in the year, but OSU's veteran experience carried the day. This Marquette team does not have that level to raise their game yet. Buzz will get them there.

The only real terrible call was calling the charge on Davante...after no-calling the tOSU charge into Jamil. But outside of that I thought they were pretty consistent. I think a lot of people who are at the BC don't get the benefit of replay which shows that the refs are right a vast majority of the time.

Based on 26 minutes against SWAC opponents? I agree he should be used, but again let's not pretend that it's going to be significantly different.
Jamil was 1-9....Jake was 0-7....Todd was 3-15.
PLENTY of those were open looks in rhythm. It was a game that looked very similar to the E8 Syracuse game. If you can't shoot from the outside, then they are going to pack it in.

Exactly right. My biggest issue was all the open shots from range we missed. If Mayo, Jamil, and Jake hit their shots yesterday, I think many people would be praising Derrick. The problem was they missed their shots, so Derrick doesn't get credit for creating since there weren't assists to back it up. And as they missed, someone had to take shots, so Derrick started throwing them up, which isn't his strong suit. He put some guys in position to score and they didn't do it, he had a couple nice drives, I really think he's doing okay.
The second half was the type of game that will make DeWil look bad. OSU closed down passing lanes and packed the inside since no one on Marquette could hit a shot. With the lanes closed, Derrick either had to force bad passes or throw up bad shots. He got no help at all. Cadougan, James, Diener...none of them would have looked good in a situation like yesterday.

11-17-2013, 02:40 PM
I think Derrick would be servicable, with a good 2 guard next to him. I'm not buying the Vander at the point argument. I do think Vander would have a field day this year with the new rules with that first quick step. He would be living at the line.
