View Full Version : MU vs DePaul...
Here we go - Did not get the list of refs pregame....
For those fans of the TV show Community, Danny Pudi was in the house filming something pre-game.
Love that inbounds play - you know if Van throws it in, its coming back to him.
At the 15:15 mark we are tied up at 10. Chris Otule has been a force, 6 pts, 2 rebs 1 block

Follow up on refs...
Pat Driscoll, John Gaffney, Alfred Smith
Gaffney calls a double foul. Ryckbosch is absolutely pounding on Davante every time down court - they warn Davante, then the close side ref(Smith) calls the foul, Gaffney comes in to over rule and call a double? What is Davante supposed to do?
At the 11:51 mark MU up 18-14 - another damn double foul call. Press row is not allowed to comment either way, yet press row was even complaining. Wow.

At the 7:32mark, MU up 24-21. Davante is in a mood because of the physical abuse he is taking. Part of me wants to say take him out, the other part of me says give him the ball. Van needs to make better decisions with the ball. Davante isn't alone, Otule also getting pounded on down low, usually from behind. Knew DePaul would be physical, but this is getting out of control.

Ryckbosch has 4 fouls and there is 51/2 mins left in first half. Averaging 5.7 minutes on the season, 9.0 in Big East, was he sent in as a goon? Should have been called for about 1/2 dozen fouls.

4 fouls in four minutes!
At the 3:01 mark MU up 34-32. Technical foul called on DePaul - not sure what he did, was right in front of me. He didn't say anything but Gaffney called it right away. Apparently he yelled "Get that **** outta here" when he blocked the shot.

Wow, that was a horrible ending.
At the 14:54 mark of the second half - its the Junior Cadougan show. Junior has 16 points, hitting circus shot after circus shot. MU still playing poor defense, but leading 56-52. DePaul's goon, Peter Ryckbosch has fouled out - 6 minutes, 5 fouls, 0 rebounds, 0 points, 1 steal, 1 assist.
MU only has 5 turnovers at this point, not bad.

Chris Otule playing a great game, 10 points at this point in the game. I wondered when the last time he hit double digits, and Andrew Grumman informs me that he had 10 against USC in Maui.

Defense is non existent today through 3 quarter pole!
At the 11:48 mark MU is up 64-55. Neither team playing good defense, as MU drives to the hoop at will and DePaul is constantly unguarded on the perimeter. MU up in rebounds 23-18. Depaul with 19 fouls already.

DePaul is shooting well today and playing well. We just can't seem to pull away.

Frustrating game to watch. Definitely not Marquette basketball today.
MU struggling, letting DePaul back into the game - at 7:43 mark Mu 68-61

Solution - quit leaving them wide open on the perimeter!!!
MU up 80-73 at the 3:21 mark. Trent Lockett with a HUGE block on Crockett.

Final 89-78. MU with 5 players in double figures...
Vander Blue - 18
Junior Cadougan - 17
Davante Gardner - 13
Jamil Wilson - 11
Chris Otule - 10
May feel just short with 9
MU pulled down a 30-24 rebounding advantage, but no clear Warrior, Otule & Cadougan both had 5.
Junior had 6 assists, Trent Lockett added 5.
MU shot 56.4% from the field, DePaul 49.2% - pretty damn good on both sides.
MU 3-11 from three, DePaul 9-20.
MU with 9 turnovers, only forced 10.
DePaul fouled - A LOT! Not only did Peter Ryckbosch fould out in 6 minutes of play, but DePaul racked up 26 fouls.
On to Georgetown!

Just home, wow was that defense hard to watch. No one could stay with Young and Kirk kept DePaul alive until Young heated up. Really poor dense on the treys as MU kept overplaying and the ball was reversed to a wide open Blue Demon. DePaul has been a poor 3 point shooting team previously on BE play. Fortunately, DPaul does not play defense.

Due to weather, Gaffney get's to call double fouls in two states, two time zones in the same day. What a pleasure.

I think it is pretty significant that our two 5's, Davante and Chris, between them had 23 points. Most of my time watching MU after the Maguire and early Raymonds years our 5's contributed very little scoring.

Depaul is shooting 30% from 3's this season. If they only make 6 we win by 20. I think the number's show keeping them out of the lane and controlling the break is the way to beat depaul. IMO.
