View Full Version : Marquette vs Seton Hall Game thread
Officials tonight.....
Brian O'Connell, Wally Rutecki and.....Jim Burr.
Update on the Seton Hall injury report - with the three+ guys down, Seton Hall only has 8 guys dressed.
MU starters - The usual, Otule, Anderson, Lockett, Blue, Cadougan
Seton Hall Starters - Teague, Karlis, Edwin, Smyth, Cosby
Not a huge crowd, but for an 8:00 start on a Wednesday vs Seton Hall - pretty respectable.

I don't like the start. Burr, underdog, undermanned team......
Game plan giving Seton Hall fits. Seton Hall's preimeter players shoot a lot and don't pass. MU has been trapping them high up on the wings over and over, and it is really throwing them off. Seton Hall usually likes to run and gun, they have been shooting on an expiring shot clock almost every time down court.
I say that and with the last timeout they switched, now in a man-to-man defense.
Behind on media stats....
At the 11:46 mark, MU up 12-4

Why can't we finish at the rim? MU looks awful

Interesting lineup for MU--Gardner, Jamile and Steve Taylor on the floor together
At the 7:34 mark, MU up 13-12 - MU has 5 turnovers, way too many, though Seton Hall has 10

Good eye DC - I noticed that too, and wonder how Jamil Wilson feels finally getting to play the SF spot.
At the 3:59 mark - MU 19-13, holding a slight edge on the glass - 11-9

With the number of turnovers Seton Hall has, we should be 20 by now
Vander Blue with a 3 pt shot at the Buzzer, MU up 26-16. And for those of you that read the Tuesday story, yes - that was one of those plays. Beautiful execution.

Burr is hurt - Official Timeout and the cheerleaders were bringing the t-shirt gun out. They push it hard, the guy in front tried to stop it, but with the guys behind pushing, it rolled right up the back of Burr's heel. He's pissed, limping, but will continue.

Marquette might be the only team in the country where the opposing team would rather play our starting 5 instead of our reserves. I think that says our subs are good, but it also means our starters really lack offensive firepower.

15:46 remaining - MU up 28-24, but already 4 turnovers in the second half. Seton Hall on an 8-2 run.

We're sleepwalking through this game. Someone needs to tell me why we're not feeding Gardner the ball.
Prior to Gardner's 3 point play, Seton Hall had outscored MU in second half 23-14
What's up with O'Connell? First he let's a travel right in front of him go, then the ball comes back around, Teague gets the ball, throws his body into Otule who goes flying, O'Connell - reacts to call the foul with a quick two step run, but holds the whistle and steps back to his original spot? Very poor.
At the 7:20 mark, MU up 49-41. Key stat - MU with 17 fouls.

With Edwin and Teague now fouled out, Seton Hall is down to 5 + 1 walk-on.

We are playing so dumb. Why do we keep fouling them?

How mad will Buzz be at them?
And it's a final - MU 69-62. Ugly, but 4-0 in the Big East

A win is a win I guess. I hope there weren't any recruits at the game or watching on TV. That was a really ugly game.

Buzz plays to his personnel. Outside of Blue, this team does not have the quick, athletic flyers to play a pretty game like Buzz's year with the Amigos and even last year. As it has shown recently, this team can win ugly. Meanwhile, I think we will play a much more aesthetically pleasing style in future with the past couple of recruiting classes (and I will include Taylor and Ferguson in that).

Who was Kevin Willard yelling at in the stands as the game was winding down? What was that conversation about? Perhaps, the "made-up press clippings" about how Marquette didn't respect Louisville found in the Cardinals lockerroom after Dameon Mason beat Louisville on a near-game ending shot a few years back? Just askin'...

Honestly, did anyone think that MU would be 4-0 in conference after the Florida game? It was ugly, but teams lacking in offensive firepower are going to have to win games like this, and frankly I think it is a sign of how good a coach Buzz is that his team can adapt. I take an ugly win over a pretty loss anyday.

He was yelling at the fans who were booing him for using last time out. Said something like "If you don't like it, go home".

And about 90% did. There was about 1500 in the stands at the buzzer.

I have no problems admitting I didn't think they would be 4-0. Given the 2 road performances, I gave them little chance to win at Pitt. I was hopeful that they would get the 3 home wins, but would not have been surprised if they started the conference season 2-3.
Their record is better than the really are, but I'm not complaining. Take a couple of ugly wins and run with them.

Yes, take it and keep building. Amazing thing is that this team is 2 shots away from being 15-1, BUT also 3 plays away from being 10-6. I guess 13-3 kind of balances things out. As buzz always says, the margin for error for his teams is very slim.

Not a huge crowd, but for an 8:00 start on a Wednesday vs Seton Hall - pretty respectable.
During the starting line-ups there were almost no students in the upper deck. As the game went on, the students were still coming in. Lower bowl of the student section was full and the upper deck was about 65% full in the upper deck. Well done students!!

Same was true of the rest of the BC. Amazing number of late arrivals for an 8:00 PM game. Many were gone with. A minute to go.

While I was a student (read, poor), we rarely arrived at the tip, due to a stop at Haggerty's to brace ourselves for the long, cold slog to MECCA. And given the 21 drinking age, I suspect the students are bracing at various residences.

My season tix are in the upper deck, but I had the chance to sit in some really nice seats yesterday. Beyond the lethargy of the fans in that section, something happened at the end of the game that really pissed me off.
With about 4:30 left in the game, I think MU was up 5-7, somewhere in there. A group of 4 in my row get up and leave in the middle of play. Everybody's view is blocked. Leaving early is one thing, but they had to get up then? Couldn't have waited 30 seconds for the under 4 timeout?
Sheesh.

Sheesh. in lower bowl, but same thing with 4 leaving with 3 minutes to go. They arrived at 8:15' missed the first 9 minutes of the 2nd half before crawling over us at the 3 minute mark. At least the couples did finish their beers. :(
That is one thing that has always Irritated me (ok, one of a hundred things), is that there are always people who come in and go out in the middle of a play. Really? Duck down in the row until the ball heads the other way - something. Some people are just clueless.

The season ticket holders in the row in front of me regularly show up 5-10 minutes into the first half... So irritating, doesn't matter what time or day.

I don't understand people who do that at games. It happens to my wife and I at MU and Milwaukee Panthers games all the time. It's only a two hour game. Just give the people a dirty look and maybe say, can't you wait untill a timeout is called.
