@SIPeteThamel: Talk of Big East “dissolving” and votes needed is moot. Bylaws say 2 FB schools need to vote for dissolution. The 7 will just leave.
This is the first I've heard of this, hard to imagine its correct, if this were true there would be no debate over how to leave. This would mean there is no choice, you start your own league or you stay.

Hmm. How come no one else has brought this up prior to Thamel?

Katz was just on ESPN and he said he thought too that the BB schools would "just leave" as opposed to dissolve. That's a curious decision, because wouldn't they leave the BE name, the garden, and the tourney assets behind then?? Why just walk away from all of that??

That could be where the disagreement is between Georgetown and others... It's very dangerous to walk away with nothing and start from scratch. The Big East name brings some credibility. I really hope they don't brand the league with a Catholic theme, that has been discussed on here and I think it would be a huge mistake from a marketing standpoint.
Leaving the Big East name and MSG would be a HUGE mistake.

There are some bright people involved in this. I would have to think they have spent hundreds of hours talking with Lawyers and Marketing people about how to go about this and what is in their best interest for the future. I have faith that they are doing what is best for the schools and the future league.

Thamel's info is incorrect according to this:

Make a deal.....Big East name is of no use to UCONN if they are the only East team left. Somebody will eventually take them.
Has to be something that can be worked out with all the smart people involved.

I would make a deal, give them some extra revenues in exchange for the name. Rebranding could be very costly and likely the name means a lot less to the three schools that we would need to negotiate with. I have a feeling the law suits would come over the revenues left to be split and not necessarily the name itself.

But.....then there is always the question of, would MSG exercise their out clause in the contract, with the C7+?? They(MSG) has already lost Cuse and Pitt, now if they lost UCONN for the BE tourney, would that push them over the edge??

RT @SIPeteThamel: The one topic not addresed in the Big East bylaws is the actual Big East name. So that's foggy right now

Hunt was pushing the Big Ten as a reasonable landing spot. I don't know if I'm going to put a ton of stock in what he says.

So much legal work has to happen here, this won't be resolved quickly.
