Stupid, stupid, stupid... What's sad is that little fact doesn't make him any less capable of doing the job, the guy probably could have been honest with Villanova and gotten hired.

Exactly. Coaches hiring assistants is a bit different than bosses hiring employees, where resumes are important. If a coach hires an assistant, he most likely has a pre-existing relationship with the guy and knows its someone he wants to bring on his staff, regardless of their educational background. So, why lie? Silly.
