Seton Hall’s Rodriguez, Villanova’s Spellman Take MBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Seton Hall forward Desi Rodriguez has been selected BIG EAST Player of the Week and Villanova forward Omari Spellman has earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors. Rodriguez helped the Pirates to a pair of wins over ranked opponents. Spellman sparked the Wildcats to a 2-0 week against local rivals.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Desi Rodriguez, Seton Hall, F, Sr. – In two wins over ranked opponents away from home, Rodriguez averaged 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In an 89-79 victory over No. 22 Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden, Rodriguez scored a game-high 24 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dealt four assists. In a 79-77 win at No. 17 Louisville, the senior scored a season-high 29 points, including the game-winning basket with less than five seconds remaining. He also had eight rebounds and four steals. Rodriguez ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 20.0 average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Omari Spellman, Villanova, F, Fr. – Spellman earns conference freshman honors for the second time this season after averaging 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week that included victories over Pennsylvania (90-62) and Saint Joseph’s (94-53). He posted his second double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win at Saint Joseph’s. Spellman is averaging 9.0 points and 7.4 rebounds for the season.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, Sr. Posted 20 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-45 win against Saint Louis for his second double-double of the year.
Jessie Govan, Georgetown, C, Jr. Averaged 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor in wins over Maine (76-55) and Coppin State (76-60).
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, So. Averaged 25.3 points and shot 55.1 percent from the floor in a 2-1 week. Hit a school-record 11 3-pointers and scored 33 points in a win over Chicago State (95-62)
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, So. Had 22 points, seven assists, four steals and four rebounds in a 90-55 victory over Sacred Heart.
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Sr. Scored 28 points in an 89-76 win over No. 11 Cincinnati and averaged 19.0 points in a 2-0 week that included a victory over No. 16 Baylor (76-63).
