One of my favorite sayings to my players - and to parents - when I coached was "Good defense makes good offense look bad, and bad defense makes bad offense look good."

That was pretty much my mantra with every group I worked with.

To make defense something players valued, every year I started the five players who were the most effective/efficient defensive players. There were even a couple of years when the most talented/most skilled offensive player did not start because he/she was not one of the top five defensive players.

That approach helped build a culture on each team that prioritized defense, and players knew they could start and earn major minutes if they worked their butts off on defense even if they were not one of the top five offensive players..
