The guy could coach. He just couldn't recruit.
His timeouts 30 seconds into a game were classic.

If I could change your last comment it would be: His timeouts 30 seconds into a game drove me nuts.
People complain about Buzz not using time outs in the first half of games or saving them. Deane was the opposite of that. I think he thought the rule was that you had to use all the time outs in the first half, not just the 30 second time out.

I don't know that he "couldn't" recruit. It's more like he "wouldn't" recruit. Never put much effort into recruiting because he arrogantly thought he could coach 5 guys picked at random from the local Y to victory. Sort of a Bo Ryan lite character.

I think he would be an excellent TV analyst - knows the game and has a great sense of humor - ESPN Radio in NYC used to have him on periodically around tourney time - he was very good.
