Versus "Power 5" Conferences

As far as I can tell, Big East teams now have a record so far this season of 26-17 against teams from the ACC, Big 12/10, Big 10/14. Pac 12, and SEC for a winning percentage of .605 with two more games to go (Providence vs. Boston College and Seton Hall vs. Rutgers).

Not too shabby for a "mid-major" conference.

The numbers I wrote in next to the records show how many games on average each school in their conference are scheduling against other Power6 schools. This shows the Big East (and the Big 10) have the tougher non-conference schedules.

Also--Nova plays Virginia in January (Not Power-5 but Georgetown plays UCONN and Xavier plays Cincy in Jan as well).

I wish MU and other BE teams did the same. Provides good exposure for the league. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Wake Forest game in '03 the last high profile January non-conference game?

Well, we did have Stetson in January last year..... :p That Wake Forest game had a lot of energy in the BC. Wish we had more of those.

Yeh, Stetson fell just a tad short of being considered "high profile". I think the first time MU may have played Stetson was for Deland, FL native Oliver "Ozone" Lee's benefit.

After - in December '03 and '04. I was in AZ for '03 game - MU was undefeated I think going into the game. Started out very well, especially Travis - AZ fans sitting around us were impressed with TD and they thought he looked like a 12 year old kid. Iguodala started to takeover the game IIRC.

That first AZ game at the BC was a real rock fight. I don't remember how much we lost by but I don't think we broke 40!

Lost 48-43 in that one. Diener and Novak combined for 3-15 shooting. ( I cheated and looked it up on MU Wiki ). Niv Berkowitz and his parents were in the crowd for the game. Niv could not play yet because 1st semester had not ended yet. Remember that player from AZ howling and screaming after a couple dunks he made.

So why don't many of those high profile, non conference match ups after the conference season starts exists any longer?

Do the coaches not like them? The conferences? Is it just a scheduling issue? I'm not a college basketball coach, but I think it would be a nice break to play a good, non conference opponent in late January / early February.

I've wondered the same. I wonder if it's just difficult to schedule. Everyone has their conference games going on, really need to be able to line up at least 5 days (2 before, 2 after) without play and I'd guess those don't cross over often. I always liked the bracket buster games that mid-majors do to boost resumes in February, it'd be nice if some of the conferences were willing to have a 5 to 7 day hiatus somewhere in there to allow these types of games.

Yeah, until Nova squeaked past DePaul at home and Butler got knocked off by St. John's on the road.

And DePaul lost by three despite Cain and Garrett going a combined 12 of 35 from the field.

I was at the MU game so I missed 'Nova, but it really looks like they fell into some of their dumb traits from last year. 'Nova is great, but when they get three-happy, they get stupid. That was the DePaul game to a tee. They are an absolutely elite team inside the arc. Against DePaul, they shot over 80% on 2PFGs. But they were only hitting 30.8% from outside, and took nearly twice as many shots from deep as they did inside (30 to 16).

Now it does look like DePaul fouled them a ton inside, but Villanova is a team that should be going inside pretty much every time down the floor. This is exactly why I think Marquette can upset 'Nova this year. Villanova can be goaded into a three-point shooting contest pretty easily, and if it's a shooting contest, I like our odds. As good as they are, their tendency toward the three is their Achilles' Heel.
