Theo John Joins Marquette Men’s Basketball Program
Two-time all-conference player one of state’s top big men
Milwaukee – Highly regarded prep standout Theo John (Minneapolis, MN/Champlin Park HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Marquette University men’s basketball program, head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Wednesday morning.
John, 6-9, 230-pounder, will arrive on campus in the summer of 2017 and have four years of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
“We are thrilled that Theo is joining our basketball family here at Marquette,” Wojciechowski said. “He is an outstanding young man from a terrific family. While his best basketball is still ahead of him, he has proven himself to be one of the best rebounders and rim protectors in high school basketball.
“He has a very strong work ethic and a desire to improve,” Wojciechowski added. “Today is a great day for Marquette basketball.”
A three-year letterwinner at Champlin Park High School under head coach Mark Tuchscherer, John has helped the Rebels to a 77-11 record during his tenure and three conference championships. He averaged 14.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game as a junior and claimed all-conference accolades for the second-straight year.
As a sophomore, John chipped in 8.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game, helping the team to a 31-1 record and an appearance in the state tournament championship game. Champlin Park was ranked in the top-25 nationally that season and fell to Apple Valley by just three points in the title matchup.
John has competed on the AAU circuit for Howard Pulley.
Marquette’s 2017 class includes John, Jamal Cain (Pontiac, MI/ Cornerstone Health & Technology HS) and Ike Eke (Detroit, MI/ University of Detroit Jesuit HS). The class, which features a trio of players taller than 6-7, adds some much-needed size to the roster.
“We are so excited about the addition of Jamal, Theo and Ike to the Marquette men’s basketball program,” Wojciechowski said. “Not only are they great kids, but they will also add to the size and athleticism of our roster. Each young man shown a strong desire to get better and a commitment to being a great teammate.”
