Nationally Ranked Guard Markus Howard Signs With MU

Scoring point guard reclassifies into 2016 class

Milwaukee – Nationally ranked prep standout Markus Howard (Chandler, AZ/Findlay Prep) has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Marquette University men’s basketball program, head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Wednesday morning.

Howard, a 5-11, 185-pounder, will arrive on campus in the summer of 2016 and have four years of eligibility with the Golden Eagles. Originally a class of 2017 recruit, the honors student (4.0 GPA) will graduate high school early and join the program’s 2016 recruiting class.

“We are so excited to add Markus to the Marquette basketball family,” Wojciechowski said. “Markus comes from a terrific family and has proven to be one of the best young guards in the United States.

“He has shown the ability to be a dynamic scorer, as well as an outstanding leader both on and off the court,” Wojciechowski added. “We can’t wait for him to get to campus.”

The Chandler, Arizona native spent the 2015-16 campaign at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada under head coach Andy Johnson. The Pilots concluded the year 28-2 overall and were ranked among the nation’s top-25 programs en route to an appearance in the national tournament. Howard led the team in scoring with 18.6 points per outing and also chipped in 3.4 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game.

He played at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona as a freshman and sophomore and was an all-state honoree both seasons. He led the state in scoring in 2014-15 with 32.4 points per game and helped the program to the second round of the state tournament. As a freshman, he netted 23.0 points per contest and guided the squad to the state semifinals.

A consensus top-50 rated recruit by the top recruiting media outlets, Howard competed on the AAU circuit for the Las Vegas Prospects and Arizona Power. Howard has also collected extensive experience with USA Basketball, highlighted by the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in 2015 with the USA Basketball Men’s U16 National Team.

Howard joins Sam Hauser (Stevens Point, WI/Stevens Point Area HS) and Brendan Bailey (American Fork, UT/American Fork HS) in Marquette’s class. Bailey will arrive on campus in 2018 after serving a Mormon mission.
