Pretty cool opportunity if it comes to fruition.......

Someone had the scoop on this about a month ago, but I didn't pay much attention to it as UConn had committed to this game. Did UConn pull out or is this a different game?

That would be absolutely awesome. Great exposure and a top flight opponent.

That would give us a pretty sick non-conference schedule. Wow... Also would likely be our first game, that's a quick way to find out what kind of team we have... Between that and Maui these kids better be ready. If we do a lot of winning that's gonna put us on the national radar real quick.
Broeker tweeted that it is all but done, ironing out details.

Anybody have any idea how tickets work for a thing like this? Do they even sell tickets to the general public?

What is the weather like in SC that time of year? When I saw the headline I was thinking San Diego or somewhere like that.
I don't think so, I think the people in the stands are all from the carrier.

I think it's a different game. Thought UConn was going to be playing in SD, like MSU and UNC did last year.
That's a pretty cool way to kick off college hoops... early game from a ship in Charleston, late game from San Diego.

awesome news!
Badger fans on Twitter: "EricTheRed" says he hopes it sinks. Really Eric? You hope a ship with 6,000 members of the US Armed Forces on it sinks?

A nice comment to make as we head in to Memorial Day weekend. Happy Memorial Day Mr. Vogel, are you headed to a Memorial Day parade this weekend to protest & yell at the veterans?

MU will have some tickets but not many. Big donors and friends of program are about the only available. Will require a security screening as well.

Wow. To take the time to put that on twitter is just amazing. Think he is a bit jealous?
I can only imagine how bad such fans will be if their team ever has a down period.

Will President Obama attend? He did in San Diego last year. The presidential election will be three days earlier but win or lose, he'll still be the Commandor-In-Chief. It'd be neat if he was in attendance.

So you're saying there's a chance?

Doubtful that the game will be on a commissioned carrier. Unlike San Diego, Charleston is not the home port of an aircraft carrier group. Notice the careful wording in all the reports that the game would be on a naval ship (i.e., "carrier" is never used). If they are using an active commissioned ship, chances are it would be a smaller ship but it would have to be one with a large enough surface to hold the court and stands. A quick search shows that the USS Yorktown, a decomissioned carrier, is a museum in Cahrleston Harbor, so that may be the location.
That said, it would be incredibly cool to see and Hizzoner hopes MU gets the honor of the game. Now, time to see if my naval officer nephew (and Marquette Navy ROTC alumnus) can score a ticket for himself as that would be awesome for him.

Caribou Jim would never make it past the security screening!

I have been a season ticket holder for 30 some years. Although I have tickets, we are residents of Kiawah Island, Sc, about 40 minutes from the Yorktown aircraft carrier. The ship is in dry dock and essentially is a museum and open daily to the public. I was in service during WW 2. Last year the game was in San Diago and was on a commissioned carrier - therefore the security. The weather should be terrific as it is most days of the year. Only questionable months here are January and early February. The PGA is at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island in August when the temps will be very, very warm. Should be a great locale although there likely will not be many seats as the carrier is much smaller than the new ones. I will be doing my best to get tickets.

You would think this would pose a lot of interesting variables... For example sun glare, wind, temperature... All these things will be hard to adjust to id think... Makes for an interesting situation... Hopefully we can pull an upset of OSU. Aren't they ranked pretty high?

In other scheduling news...saw Jimmy Lemke post that UW-Milwaukee will be playing Marquette this year, so that's one more opponent known. So far, we know...
Ohio State (N)
LSU (H)
Wisconsin (H)
Green Bay (A)
Milwaukee (Assuming H)
BE/SEC Challenge (A, assuming Florida or Mizzou)
Maui (N, 3 of Texas, UNC, Butler, Illinois, USC, Miss State, Chaminade)
Maui Mainland (H, last year the four were Belmont, Middle Tennessee, UNC-Greensboro, and Towson)
Most like 3 buy games after that, since that's a very tough schedule.
Don't know why people think the contract with UWM ended already, it had not.

I thought last year was the last year of that series. Was it a 4/1? I thought it started in 2007-08 and last year was year 5. How much longer is it going?
2007-08 was Crean's last season. Wasn't the latest contract agreed to with Buzz at the helm?

Nope, we played them first in 2007 and laid 100 on them that year and in Buzz's first year.

I emailed Buzz to go out and find an "aircraft carrier" for MU. I think he misunderstood.

I believe the OSU game will prevent us from playing Milwaukee this season.

How will college basketball in the state of Wisconsin survive?

I think the reason why this is getting done is due to both AD's being ND Domers, Gene Smith and Larry Williams. Also, note that the ND women are plaing the Ohio State women in the opener.
My guess is that the ADs had nothing to do with putting this together, more like the network approached the two schools (coaches) about it.

Even with the tOSU game, we still have room for at least 3-4 buy games. I know one of them is spoken for, would guess the others are in negotiations. But if UW-M was willing, there's no reason they couldn't be one of those buy games. As a team projected to be sub-200 next year, they aren't in the strongest of negotiating points.

I read that they don't yet have a network to telecast the game and have begun to work on contracting with one. Both Smith and Williams played football at ND so I'm sure they have known each other for some time.
