Sorry - late for game due to kids' games...

Refs for today are Brian O'Connell, Tony Greene, Tony Chiazza.

MU down 19-15, allowing too many easy baskets.

IWB

Just looking at my first stat sheet, MU with 5 turnovers in first 9 minutes.

Luke is owning them down low, StJ starting to get a little over-physical with him, need to keep pounding it in.

We simply turn the ball over way too much. It's almost embarrassing.

IWB
01-09-2016, 02:29 PM
MU down 5 at the 7:59 mark, key for the Johnnies is 10 pts off of turnovers.

IWB
01-09-2016, 02:34 PM
Turnovers are bad, but when you look at it, out of the 7, 6 are from freshmen.

Carter - 2
Cheatham - 2
Ellenson - 2

Wilson - 1

It will improve with experience.

Matt Heldt with a putback - got to love it!

I don't think St. John's has ever shot this well from the outside.

IWB
01-09-2016, 02:40 PM
at the 3:48 mark

MU up to 9 turnovers - need to protect the ball!

Score is 27-29, more than half of MU's points are in the paint, keep pumping it in even if Matt is the one in there!

IWB
01-09-2016, 02:42 PM
St. John's is at 43.3% (13-30) with 60% from 3pt (6-10).

IWB
01-09-2016, 02:43 PM
With that 3pt now 46.9% (15-32) and 63.6% (6-11)

Wojo sitting both Henry and Luke at the same time too long. What's the point of protecting them if you let SJU build a ten point lead anyway?

Markedman
01-09-2016, 02:52 PM
Man that was ugly. St John's is a horrible 3 point shooting team and they made 7 of 11 in the first half.

We can't match their quickness and can't score against the zone.

Halftime comments...

One person I won't name told me that no one uses a ball fake anymore, get the ball and they know exactly what you are going to do. Said everytime Luke shows a ball fake he will go to his right. A former player added that even McIilvaine had the 'Earthquake Shake'.

On the former players - Bo Ellis getting it done in his new role. Sitting courtside today are Earl Tatum, Bo Ellis, Amal McCaskil, Aaron Hutchins, Artie Green, Rob Logtermann. Love to see former players coming back.

On my way back up to my media perch I witnessed not one, not two, but three members of the Fighting 218 YAWNING!

Coming into the game St. John's was shooting 40% on the season, 31% from three.

As of now they are shooting 51% and 63.6%.

Looked at the Pre-Game stat sheet they hand out to media, it says .314.

Just looked up their stats on ESPN, also .314.

IWB

Haanif needs to stop travelling. I think 3 of his 4 turnovers are travelling calls, two of which were pretty bad.

At the last TV timeout for AL's Day they introduced three players that played for AL, Joe Thomas, Earl Tatum and Bo Ellis. Could have added Jerry Homan as he is at every game too.

Finally showed a replay at the BC, it was Henry's foul - bad call.

MU playing with fire on defense, look panicked when on offense. Need to calm down and control the game!

TedBaxter

Just can't pull away. Need defensive stops and then be efficient on the offensive end.

IWB
01-09-2016, 03:52 PM
Luke has become a machine. His last hoop was a beautiful left handed shot, now he powers it in and picks up the foul. Still can't figure out why he got called for his 4th, and as I type he picks up his 5th... OUCH!

IWB
01-09-2016, 03:56 PM
Wojo is lucky he didn't pick up a T. MU scores, everyone heads down court except one ref. Wojo gets on the court, starts slapping the floor and coaches his guys. Ref runs right into him, basically grabs Wojo and pushes him off the court. Wojo did not react favorably, ref could have T'd him.

Game getting out of control, refs need to whistle quicker.

IWB
01-09-2016, 03:57 PM
Bad call on the turnover. Yes, Cheatham lost it but it looked like one of the StJ players was slapping at the ball while standing out of bounds.

Glad they are taking a look at it.

IWB
01-09-2016, 03:59 PM
Glad St John's came back down to earth with their shooting in 2nd half, a lot had to do with MU's D, kudos to the guys for stepping up and playing tough D.

Happy to get the win.....still waiting for us to play a full 40 minute complete game.

Might not be in the cards this year.

Duane and Henry really stepped up in the 2nd half.

Turnovers on both sides were brutal.

IrwinFletcher

With 8 minutes to go in the game, MU had 17 TO's. 14 were from Freshman (Carter, Haanif, Henry). Have to hope that gets better.

Just looking over the box score and the negatives that jumped out at me are the high turnovers and Luke with only 2 rebounds. Positives - amount of free throws and conversion percentage on ft and 3pt

They were attacking him off the pick and roll. Very NBA like offensive move and Luke had trouble moving his feet. It was borderline but I thought both his fourth and fifth were good.

First half was brutal. St. John's lead by 8 at half. Henry and Luke both on bench for big minutes with 2 fouls. SJ shot the lights out from 3 and Yakwe seemed to block every shot we took.

2nd half was much better. Duane hit 3 big threes 3-3) after missing all but 1 in first half. Ended with 5 assists and only 1 TO.

Carter had a bunch of steals and Henry had a big 2nd half after scoring only 2 in the first.

We had 20 turnovers again......many of them unforced. St. John's had a ton in the 2nd half as well.

If we play like that against Xavier we will lose by 20. IMO

Ps made virtually every free throw down the stretch to seal it away.
JJ fell awkwardly in first half and didn't return. Was on the bench though.

Refs were ass which is apparently a theme in conference play. Henry had two offensive fouls in 1H which put him on the bench - both were bad calls IMO. He only played 9 minutes in 1H.

The refs were really poor today. Also, I've never seen a game with so many unforced TOs by both teams. An ugly day at the BC.

Worked out in the end though right?Yes it did. But our Warriors might have been down more at halftime with the patchwork lineup those last minutes of the half. The atmosphere was very gloomy at the BC during halftime. Henry and Duane and Traci (until he started throwing the ball around) came up big in the second half.

I thought both of the charging calls on HE were legit. Luke was called for a blocking foul that was really weak.

We made 10 of 10 free throws in the last minute of the game - 8 of 8 by freshmen and 2 of 2. In fact, we were 15 of 15 the second half.

Traci with 8 assists but he could have had double-digit assists. He didn't need to try that alley-oop pass on the break. Plus, there were a couple of times teammates didn't finish at the rim.

He also should have had another hoop on a fast break, but he flared away from the hoop - which was very weird. Five turnovers is too many, but I love the 8 assists....and the 4 steals.

Both Greene and Chiazza were awful today. Don't know if I've seen another game with so many offensive fouls, many of which were questionable, at best. O'Connell was the star official today. Yikes.

With 40 seconds left? Does a couple minutes really mean that much? What if you had hit an accident? What if you had hit two extra lights?
If you are really cutting it that close to another appointment more important, than perhaps you should not have gone in the first place or left even earlier.

I will leave when I want, and you leave when you want. I did not leave with 40 seconds, more like 20, game was over. Christ you guys complain alot about the fans. Frankly, I am getting sick of this bitching and wonder why I make the trek from Madison in the first place with such a pompous bunch of pr1cks!

Let's all relax - yes, there are always times and reasons why people need to leave early, and that's ok - I was late because I took my kid to her 10:30 game that didn't start until 11:15.

When I started posted what I did, the game wasn't completely in hand yet, but what I saw in the section directly below me was this - As soon as someone got up to leave, it seemed like others jumped up as if, "oh crap, people are leaving, let's go or we'll never get out".

Again, I posted with 40 seconds left, it started happening at about 1:30.

I thank all fans who show up. With 20 home games a year, there are bound to be conflicts. Coming from downtown Chicago for a 6PM game is no treat getting there either. Nor was it a joy getting home at 1:30am after those old Big East 9pm start games. As a MU alum, we should all be thankful for fan support. There are far more important things in life, and a MU game is a nice diversion.

As for Big East refs, why are they so inconsistent? The pre-conference games were called more evenly. Also, it looks like O'Connell is packing a few extra lbs. this season.

Yes, there are obvious reasons. My bone to pick are with those obvious fair weather fans who practically push us out of the way while whacking us with a coat or bag or spill beer or soda on us while we are missing a play or two or three....
