Wow... Very Dick Bennett-esque... Have a feeling UW is going to struggle now. That's a pretty big blow

According to a Wisconsin release, associate head coach Greg Gard will assume the title of interim head coach, effective immediately.

Timing makes perfect sense.

Heck of a Coach and hope he can enjoy retirement.
That MU victory may have thrown a wrench in things. Could have retired after that and all of the UW faithful would have loved that. Corpus Christi?

Clearly, Bo did an incredible job at UW, but this timing is not the best.
As Bo tries to figure out the wife and girlfriend thing, I think he may have screwed things up for his boy Gard.
He walks away so his guy gets the interim job and gets a chance to show his stuff. Unfortunately, even if Gard does a good job, there is a good chance after starting 7-5, and with the Big 10 schedule that UW has, that UW may miss the tourney for the first time in a long time.
So, knowing Barry doesn't really want Gard, did Bo screw Gard's chances by bailing out on the season when he did with the team he put together?
I guess now Bo won't go down as the coach that didn't make the NCAA tourney in 2016, it would be Gard, so Bo can retire with his streak in place.

Looking through UW colored glasses, it appears that Bo really didn't want to coach this year and it's better for him to step down and let Gard coach.
Looking through MU colored glasses, it looks very selfish on Bo's part. If the team was 9-2, there is no chance he steps down mid-season. The ship is starting to sink and he just took the only life preserver.

I mentioned this on the other board, but this was apparently supposed to happen before the season began. But Gard's dad was diagnosed with cancer and died at the end of October. Bo stayed on until Gard was ready.

Furthermore I don't think Barry is terribly happy about this. However he really can't take his unhappiness with Bo out on Gard. It isn't his fault that Bo forced his hand.

My tribute to Bo. Great career, great rival, and great character to poke fun at one last time...
Every Who down in Whoville can finally rest in peace,
They can play with their pop guns and eat their roast beast!
For the Grinch who has tormented the Who girls and boys
Will finally stop complaining about the Noise!
NOISE NOISE NOISE!!!
The Grinch hates joy and the Whos fast-paced basketballing.
He always thought "I must put a stop to this whole thing!"
"Why for fifteen years I've put up with it now!"
"I must suck the joy out of basketball, but HOW?"
Then he got an idea! An awful idea!
THE GRINCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
"I know just what to do" The Grinch shouted at Gard,
"I'll make my own team to rule all the schoolyards!"
Of course the Grinch shouted, he shouted and growled,
He shouted at refs, and growled about fouls.
But his crying and whining and frowning, it worked!
His slow-paced teams kept on winning despite him acting like the jerk.
He took his team to the top of Mount Crumpit,
So close to the title he could see the summit.
But just before the basketball gods answered his prayers,
His teams were undone by those confounded rent-a-players!
Back down in Whoville, he heard a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low, then it started to grow!
The Whos were all singing, singing songs that were upbeat!
Every good Who was reveling in that nasty old Grinch's defeat!
And the Grinch stood there frozen, struggling to comprehend,
Why he'd just have to try to suck the joy out of basketball once again!
But a mighty Who Hero stood in his way, the Grinch's courage shrunk three sizes that day!
And so did Who Ellenson finally say, "Go away Grinch, oh Grinch go away!"
